The 10 Worst Prisons In The World
Jun.30, 2008 in World

The thought of going to prison is enough to scare the living daylights out of anyone, especially with the horror stories that you can read in newspapers and books and those you see on TV.
Stabbings, murders, violence, gang rape and any number of other horrors are all widely broadcast by people that have spent time on the inside. Of course, they’re not your run of the mill prison stories because you don’t tend to hear much about the ones that don’t see any action from one year to the next, but the same names do keep coming up time and time again.
Certain prisons, both old and new, are notorious for violence and some easily out perform others in the horror stories stakes. The 10 worst prisons in the world are listed below. Read ‘em and weep!
1. ADX, Colorado – This is the ultimate prison, literally. Since it opened in 1994, ADX is nothing but slow and inhumane torture. Although those there are the worst of the worst, human rights protestors from all over the world have targeted it. Inmates are only allowed out of their cells for 9 hours a week and barely interact with anyone. There’s hardly any sunlight and you have to do everything in your cell. If ever there was a way to destroy any semblance of hope an individual had then ADX is it!
2. Tadmor Military Prison, Syria – This is one of the most brutal prisons ever. Torture, executions and untold brutality goes on within these walls. The medieval methods of torture have been well documented. Innocent and guilty alike have been dragged via a rope until they’re dead, beaten to death with pipes and chopped into pieces with an axe. However, that’s nothing compared to the massacre of June 27, 1980. Approximately 500 inmates were killed for no apparent reason by the guards and commandos. This is the worst known massacre of its kind to ever have taken place.

3. Carandiru Penitentiary, Brazil – Prison massacres, HIV, legalised torture… Whatever you can imagine from a prison, they have it here. A fifth of all 7,500 inmates have HIV and the vast majority of them didn’t have it when they first walked through the gates. On top of that, if they have to have surgery then forget the anaesthetics. Apparently, anaesthetic is a luxury soothe patients are operated on without anything to numb the pain at. Instead, they’re left to scream. Every now and then there’s a massacre or riots as well but at least that’d be relatively painless in relation.
4. La Sante Prison, France – La Sante is well known for its suicide figures, with 124 suicides occurring in 1999 alone. Prisoners have actually eaten rat poison to escape the depravity here. Some prisoners become slaves, others only leave their cells for 4 hours a day and the violence is horrendous. The punishment block has no running water and many are left down there for days because of minor misdemeanours. The treatment just isn’t humane by any stretch of the imagination.
5. La Sabeneta Prison, Venezuela – With 1 guard to 150 inmates here its no wonder that this is one of the worst prisons on Earth right now. Corruption and bribery run riot here, and that’s just the staff! The prisoners are worse with 624 inmates being hurt and 196 being murdered within the walls in 1995 alone. Yes, all of that happened in just one year! The previous year though 108 died in a day when the inmates had a gun battle… between themselves. Not a nice place to be methinks.

6. Rikers, New York – 5 years ago, this prison would’ve been at number 1 on the list but recent reforms have forced a dramatic improvement so it’s a little tamer than it used to be. For example, the 70 stabbings that take place there every year now used to be around 1,000 a decade ago. The violence is legendary and guards reported that they lived in fear of their lives. Although this isn’t the case anymore, it’s a ghost that’ll haunt the prison forever.
7. Diyarbakir Prison, Turkey – This is a lovely prison to be in. With children imprisoned for life and guards masterminding attacks against the prisons, it’s definitely less than a safe place to be. Prisoners are classed largely as political so they have no rights whatsoever. This may sound a little like the Dark Ages, and it really is. The guards do as they please, as an attack against 33 prisoners in 1996 proves. 10 died and 23 were injured, all at the hands of the authority.
8. San Quentin State Prison, California – As one of the world’s best known prisons, San Quentin is synonymous with violence, executions and the worst of the worst criminals in California to date. It has over 1500 employees and they still can’t control the inmates. The riots in February 2006 proved a good example of that. Racial attacks led to 100 prisoners being badly injured and 2 killed. That’s not the only incident but it’s a great example of just what goes down behind the walls.

9. Mendoza Prison, Argentina – It isn’t the violence here that you have to worry about but the conditions that you’d have to survive if you were sent there. The prison should cater for 600 prisoners but there are over 1000 more there than should be so the overcrowding is horrendous. That isn’t to say that you wouldn’t be exposed to torture because you most likely would at some point.
10. Nairobi Prison, Kenya – Some prisons make their way onto the list of worst prisons not because of violence but because of the conditions that they house prisoners in year in and year out. Inmates here tend to be naked and infected with horrible diseases that kill them slowly. Overcrowding means that they don’t get the medical help they need and most die in agony.

LOL at this list. Unfortunately I had to take up residency in San Quentin for approximately 50 days before being transferred to another prison. It was only reception and not the mainline, but definately wasn't too bad thinking back. I did get to see Richard Ramirez(night stalker) while he was being escorted to a medical visit. But in reality, nothing in the United States is comparable to any third world country. It just isn't.

not a bad post, simpaticone, but whats up with posting an article from 2 year ago?
I saw this show on E. about a guy in Nicaragua who was convicted of killing his hot girlfriend. There was no evidence but 2 of the robbers confessed & said the gringo was there. He was not & spent time in some Prison there. It looked grimy. For some reason I didn't check the date kinda just posted it. With all the people on here Im sure someone has had bad experiences in Mexico (my friend did 6 months , he don't talk about it .) ? It was that bad & he had $$$.
Kinda made it worse he is asian & knows karate big time. He could have been out way sooner but he had to fight I know that by the condition he was in when he came home. Buff , yet broken and relieved.

With everybody on here maybe someone who is WILLING to talk about what they went through would be good reads.

Going to prison is never pretty. You should’ve thought twice before hitting your ex girlfriend with an extension cord for not having dinner ready before you got home. Between the prospect of making license plates for 13 cents an hour, getting shanked in a prison riot, and fending off Big Felix in the showers by giving him your fruit cocktail after every lunch, daily life in the slammer is as bad as it can get in this life.

However, it can be worse, it can get MUCH worse. These nefarious modern day dungeons make the Shawshank Redemption look like a picnic.

ADX Florence (Florence, Colorado)

The United States Penitentiary Administrative Maximum Facility, adoringly known as ADX Florence and the Alcatraz of the Rockies by those in the biz, is a fucking fortress of a prison built to house the most dangerous criminals in the United States.

Constructed in 1983 as a response to inmates that killed their guards at another federal penitentiary due to lax regulations, the hardened felons at ADX Florence are isolated and nearly in permanent lock down. Beautifully situated in remote Florence, in central Colorado, the 430 odd prisons serving time are the worst offenders in the federal prison system.

What Makes It So Bad?

Well, first of all the people serving time here, as aforementioned, are the scum of the world. If you get sent here you are truly fucked. 22% of inmates in ADX Florence have killed prisoners in other facilities, 35% have attempted to attack other prisoners or officers, and many are mass murdering psychopaths.

Inmates include Theodore Kaczynski (The Unabomber), Anthony Casso (under bossssss of Lucchese crime family), Terry Nichols (Oklahoma City bombing conspirator), the deceased Timothy McVeigh, Robert Hanssen (former senior FBI agent who sold state secrets to the Russkies), and various Islamic terrorists including Ramzi Yousef and Richard Reid.

As a result, many never interact with any other human beings other than guards. Inmates stay in in a 7ft by 12 ft cell in solitary confinement for 23 hours a day, with one hour exercise in a different concrete chamber or an empty concrete swimming pool under armed guard. The cell’s furniture is made out of concrete, including a desk, stool, and bed. In addition, there is a toilet that shuts off automatically if clogged, a shower that runs on a timer to prevent flooding, and a sink with no trap.

The only view of the outside is a 4 inch by 4 inch window that prevents the prisoner from knowing their exact location within the prison because the only view is the sky. Escape is literally impossible. Aside from over a thousand remote controlled steel doors, there are: 12 ft fences laced with barbed wire; laser beams, pressure pads, and attack dogs in the area between the prison walls and the outer fence; and many, many motion detectors.

What makes it so bad is the sensory deprivation of the inmates. Eric Rudolph, the Olympic Park Bomber, said that the prison, “Using solitary confinement, Supermax is designed to inflict as much misery and pain as is constitutionally permissible.”

Rudolph also stated that the prison, “Is a closed-off world designed to isolate inmates from social and environmental stimulate, with the ultimate purpose of causing mental illness and chronic physical condition such as diabetes.” A former warden described the prison as a “clean version of hell.”

La Santé Prison (Paris, France)

Built in 1867 in what is now southwestern Paris, La Santé Prison is the most notorious prison in France. La Santé has a long and ominous history. The prison served as the main location in Paris where the French government put prisoners to death. In the early 1900s until public executions were banned in 1939, prisoners convicted to die were executed publicly via guillotine on the street right beyond the prison walls. Prisoners were executed at La Santé until 1979.

What Makes it So Bad?

What can be so bad about a French prison that doesn’t execute its prisoners anymore? What, they don’t serve French bread and a fine Bordeaux to inmates? According to Dr. Veronique Vassuer, a former prison doctor who came out with a controversial book on the subject, conditions for inmates were wretched and deplorable.

First, France doesn’t have such a thing as habeas corpus, so some stayed more than four months in crowded conditions without even being charged. Prisoners carried skin diseases because they were only allowed to shower twice a week in spite of living in 100 degree conditions in their cells.

Another skin disease, caused by eating rotten food, has not been seen anywhere else in France since the Second World War. Rats so infested the prison that inmates had to shove sheets and clothes in every crack of their cells to keep them out. 124 inmates committed suicide in 1999, about 5 times the amount in all of California’s prisons.

A petition by former prisoners deploring the conditions also cited, “Foul cells, systematic rape, humiliation of visiting families, crude health care, drug dealing by guards and detention of young offenders in cells with seasoned criminals have turned prisons into factories of crime and misery.”

Dr. Vassuer also wrote about “rapes, bizarre self-mutilations, attempted suicides and the practice of turning the weakest cellmates into slaves.” One 21 year old prisoner was raped by his two older cellmates on his first night in prison, one of whom had AIDS. Guards also tortured prisoners, sold drugs, and raped prisoners themselves. My God, this sounds so awful.

Black Beach (Malabo, Equatorial Guinea)

Widely considered one of if not the worst prison on the continent of Africa, Black Beach prison is one place you don’t want to be. Recently several Westerners were convicted of plotting to overthrow the government of Equatorial Guinea, and were so afraid of being murdered and tortured there they furiously appealed their sentences, many to no avail. Although one, Simon Mann, was later pardoned for “humanitarian” reasons by the government, his fears and the others were well founded.

What Makes it so Bad?

If third world hell hole isn’t enough to scare you, Black Beach has a wide array of trecherous accomodations that will make your skin crawl. Prisoners are routinely denied rudimentary medical attention and subsist on meager rations. Some inmates starve to death. Torture is common. One Western coup plotter officially died of “cerebral malaria with complications”, but other inmates claim he was beaten to death.

Other than the starvation and physical torture, inmates are shackled with handcuffs and ankle chains for most of the day, are rarely allowed out of their cells, and a lack of basic hygiene that leads to disease.

Camp 1391 (Between Hadera and Afula, Israel)

The ADX Florence of the state of Israel, Camp 1391 holds what it considers the most dangerous and high risk inmates in the country. It is also shrouded in mystery. Its existence wasn’t even known before 2003, and was located accidentally by a historian investigating old police buildings. It did not appear on any modern maps and was airbrushed out of aerial photos.

What Makes it so Bad?

Well, considering the Israeli government kept its very existence secret for decades and many consider Camp 1391 to be “the Israeli Guantanamo”, Camp 1391 is not your average summer camp for kids.

No, this prison, surrounded by concrete walls, iron gates, and defended by attack dogs and armed guards, is a place were you don’t want to be. When prisoners arrive they don’t even know where they are, they are are told they are in a submarine, on the moon, or other outlandish places.

Inmates’ claims of abuse include rape and being sodomized with a stick, solitary confinement in dark dirty cells, complete with a bucket for a toilet that was emptied only after a couple of days, subjected to sleep deprivation and other invasive interrogation techniques. The Israeli military refuses access to the Red Cross, lawyers, and even members of Israel’s parliament! The government’s response: “”Facility 1391 is situated on a secret military base. The base is used by the security services for various classified activities and thus its location is kept confidential.”

Moral of the story? Be good girls and boys.

PRISONS & PRISONERS
The problem with listing foreign prisoners is that many are forgotten, shamed, or have no desire to have their cases publicised (which can sometimes result in longer terms & harsher treatment ... sometimes not!)

The following lists are in no way complete or always up to date - we petition Embassies for lists, some respond, some don't care. Most of these listings are from family or friends of prisoners, or actual prisoners themselves, and it can sometimes be several months before we hear anything back from them.

Please let us know if you have any information updated regarding any of the prisoners listed below, or new listings of inmates which will allow us to keep these pages updated & current.

If you know of a prisoner who needs contact please contact us here
