Mara Salvatrucha is a Los Angeles-based, predominantly Salvadoran, gang that is also active in Central America. The gang's name is commonly abbreviated as MS-13, Mara, MS, or "posse," and is composed of Salvatruchas. Its name translates into "street-tough Salvadorans" in the Spanish language. The gang originated among Salvadoran emigrants living in Los Angeles but it has since spread to other parts of North America. It emerged in the 1980s during El Salvador's violent civil war and is estimated as of 2005 to have 50,000 members in Central America and between 8,000 and 10,000 members in the United States [1] The "13" is a gang number associated with southern California and also signifies the thirteen rules that the gang follow.
I saw "explorer" on the discover channel last night. They were talkin about a MS-13 Gang Mexican Mafia. I geuss it's gotten soo bad to the point that the FBI is getting involved. They said in 2005 there were 2,000 deaths in el savador... all MS-13 gang related. This gang said to be in 33 states across america.
In September 2005, a two-day sting involving more than 6,400 government agents from the United States, Honduras, El Salvador, Guatemala, and Mexico produced the arrests of close to 660 members of MS-13.
MS-13 is a far more dangerous gang than previous and current rivals due to their large numbers and complex member network. Their members are typically more brazen than other gangs due to the fact if they become wanted in the U.S. their gang can arrange for their transportation across the border and relocate in a 'friendlier' country while additional members are smuggled across the border. MS-13 has now begun to target and has fired upon U.S. border patrol from the Mexican side. [4]
THE THREAT THEY POSE
In El Salvador, Honduras, Guatemala, and Mexico they are known to threaten officials who interfere with their business; this typically involves a verbal threat to killing that official or their family. The governments of these countries have been unable to effectively defend themselves against this gang, and in return this gang has been able to gain considerable political power. This strategy of hi-jacking governments is now being used against federal, state, and local governments in the United States. In 2005 Los Angeles was investigating the gang and in retaliation they left a bullet on the lead detectives door.
