I NEVA LIKED IT. I REMEMER WHEN MUTHA-FUKAS FIRST MADE THAT TERM TO BE "POLITICALLY CORRECT". CAUSE AIN'T NOBODY PHYSICALLY AND IN ACTUALITY THE COLOR BLAK AND THE OTHA TERMS SEEM RACIAL LIKE "COLORED" AND "NEgRO". PLUS THEY HAVE HISTORY. WHY I DON'T LIKE THAT TERM IS CAUSE MOST BROTHAS OUT HERE AIN'T NEVA BEEN TO THE CONTINENT OF AFRICA OR AKNOWLEDgE IT AND IT CONFLICTS WITH ACTUAL AFRICANS MIgRATIN' AND NATURALIZIN' THEMSELVES HERE. THEY ARE THE TRUE AFRICAN AMERIKKKANS.

THAT'S WHY I SAY A TERM LIKE NUBIAN-AMERICAN IS MORE PRECISE. WHAT YOU THINK?

"CALLIN ME AN AFRICAN-AMERICAN
LIKE EVERYTHING IS FAIR AGAIN, SHIT,
DEVIL, YOU GOT TO GET THE SHIT RIGHT
I'M BLACK, BLACKER THAN A TROJAN MIDNIGHT"
(Ice Cube, "When Will They Shoot?")

"I'M AN AFRICAN....AND I KNOW WHAT'S HAPPENIN"
(Dead Prez)

I think you can't call yourself "American" unless you are proud of what Amerikkka does.

Although I'm not black, I hope it's ok for me to drop my 2 cents. First off I think it's fucked that most Blacks (no disrespect EDJ, but if it's cool I'll use that term to refer to African-Americans, unless you're offended) any ways I think it's fucked that most Black homies have to refer to themselves as "African" - American. I mean I'm not North American- American, because I'm orginally from that continent. I'm a Mexican- American and because so many Africans were taken from there ancestral homes/ tribes/ countries, etc they can't pinpoint their true heritage so they have to rely on the Continent. I think if they could they might think of them selves as Kenyan-Americans, Somalian-American, etc.

EDJ,

Are you ashamed of your African roots?

Tecnhically speaking, black folks are African Americans, just like white people are European Americans, Asians are Asian Americans, Latins are Latin Americans and so on.

How ever I find it very interesting that white folks reffer to themselves as Americans only. Why?

me personally, i never take offense to the term "colored". its a positive word. i would rather be colored than plain white. i think everybody would. everybody is, except white people. its a beautiful word and i'm proud to be COLORED. i have melatonin that protects me from the sun and i have never blushed...

I generally refer to Africans in the U.S. as African American, because simply put, they are Africans living in America. It is understandable that the majority of Africans did not migrate to this nation; so I myself (If I was African) would find it a little discomforting taking a name "America" (who robbed me of my homeland) and placing it before the name of the continent which I am from, in order to classify my nationality. I guess it all depends on your state of mind. If you want to cherish the existing opportunities and rights available in this country, as well as improve them for yourself and those of your culture, then you should adopt the name "American" into your nationality. However, if you will forever hold a grudge for the European's who robber your home (which is not out of reason), and you choose to live in this country because you have no other choice, then I would drop the AMERICAN and call myself African, or just BLACK.

Is it a fact that every African living in the United States is of Nubian decent?

I don't think that's completely true. There are people who want to be a part of this country in an effort to make it better for themselves and their culture. Those people, although possibly unsatisfied with the present condition of this nation, should want to be considered a part of America. I was watching Al Sharpton on the Democratics Debate last night arguing as a presidential candidate and i'll tell you what, he makes more sense than almost all of those goofballs; HE is an African American.

I don't think he's ashamed. He just knows what he is and what he isn't. His point is that African Americans are people that were born in that continent and then migrated over to the US. His ancesters may have migrated here but I don't think it was voluntary, so he's making an identity he feels ok with, rather than be generalized into something he doesn't feel he is. Which brings me to my second point. I may be Latino, but I don't like the term Latin American to define my nationality. I am not Puerto Rican, Guatemalan, Chilean, etc. I may share similar cultural aspects with them but I am Mexican.

these hyphenated names are a product of the american obsession with identitiy.....if we dont put these tags on people we will lose our minds....lol.....think about it....when you met somebody you immediately know their heritage, if not you ask.
