Inspired by Calliopboy, I decided to do a followup story on Ruthless like he did with No Limit. Its long just so you know:
The Story behind Ruthless Records

Ruthless Records was one of the first Independent Black Companies in Hip Hop. Eazy E started the company off with money he used to sell dope from, He use to be the neighborhood hustler who was doing his thing until he realized that there was bigger paper in the music biz, So he went and recruited 4 other members Dr Dre, Yella, Mc Ren, and Ice Cube from other neighborhoods to start the group NWA(Niggaz With Attitude).

They sold copies of their mixtapes out of the trunk of their cars and were establishing a indenity from the streets. The buzz has gotten huge and controversal that it caught the attention of Jerry Heller, A former manager of Rock bands and groups like World Class Wrecking Crew, Heller was impressed with what he heard and he along with Eazy helped land a major deal with West Coast based label Priority Records. NWA's Debut album Straight Outta Compton went double platinum without any radio or television airplay. It was mainly due to the controversy at the time with F*ck the Police but impressive nevertheless. Eazy Duz it(Eazy E's solo) would then be a followup and that also was a hit record due to Eazy's colorful persona and balance between Street and mainstream.

Despite those impressive numbers and Ruthless generating mad publicity and cashflow, E had a bigger motive and that was to have his label to grow. He was out to prove that Ruthless wasnt strictly a "Rap Label", That it can also tap into other markets. He signed other rappers such as D.O.C., Above the Law, Kokane, and even decided to tap into the R&B/Pop scene with Michelle' and JJ Fad. E deserved alot of credit for trying to branch his label's wings and he would even later on sign the black eyed Peas and Chicano rapper Frost to the label. He took all of these guys under his wing when the majors were overlooking them and gave these niggas a shot.

But you know when success is too good , You know negativity has to come to play and like many other companies, It would hit Ruthless the hardest. Things started to get complicated when Ice Cube felt that he wasnt gettin paid his fair share and he was right. Cube has not only appeared on half of Straight Outta Compton but he along with Ren has also wrote alot of Eazy's and Dre's shyt and he felt that he was owed more. Eazy and Heller started to get more greedier as the money was started to come in because not only E was the CEO of the company, He was also being paid as a solo artist and as a member of the group. Cube saw what was going on and saw that Niggas was cheating them out of their money so he bounced and moved on to do solo projects.

Despite Cube leaving, E was still having success with the projects from Above The Law, D.O.C., JJ Fad and Michelle but the bitter split from Cube would forever haunt the label and things would get much worser. NWA continued as a group without Cube and released the EP titled 100 miles and Runnin and it went gold proving that the split from Cube didnt affect their popularity or sales but it would start off a very ugly rivary between Cube and NWA. Things would get worser as D.O.C. would lose his voice because of a bad car accident, This really hurt the label because D.O.C. was very talented.

NWA released Niggaz4Life in 91 and it was one of the highest selling Rap albums at the time, E still knew what he was doing proving that they can still push units without Cube, Dre and Eazy were rhyming more this time around but it wasnt really a issue. They even proceeded to diss Cube harder on the track Niggaz4Life. But Cube wasnt gonna take it lying down as he released one of the vicious diss tracks in Hip Hop with No Vasaline as he talked about how Eazy and Heller was cheating them out of their money, How they sold out and became a bunch of phonies. This track put a end in not only a fued but also NWA as Dre would soon leave due to the same reasons as Cube to start up Death Row Records.

Ruthless's reputation was becoming more damaged and Niggas started to feel like they were getting cheated out of their money from Eazy and Heller. Dr Dre, Michelle, D.O.C., and other acts bounced to Death Row also and soon would start up a new fued between Ruthless and Death Row. Eazy filed out a complant against Dre, Suge and Death Row because he felt that they used strong armed tatics to make them release them from the label

Dr Dre released the Chronic album in 1992 and dissed Eazy E on two of the songs titled F*ck Wit Dre Day and Bitches aint Shit. The Chronic album along with many other Death Row projects were highly sucessful and were overshadowing Eazy E and Ruthless Records. Death Row had the streets and mainstream lockdown while Ruthless was fading fast right out of the game.

Eazy E knew that his label was in big trouble, His greed was what caused some niggas to leave from the label, Dre and Cube dissed him very hard, and his street credablity was also becoming suspect because he was donating money to the Republican party and supporting one of the cops in the Rodney King beating, Many people including Willie D from the Gheto Boys labeled Eazy E as a sellout for his suspecious actions.

Ruthless hasnt really had a hit since Niggaz4life even though albums from Kokane, Mc Ren, were heavily slept on. Eazy knew that he had to get back into the Rap game because they were on the verge of being erased out of the picture. In order to keep Ruthless's name in people mouths he had to put out his own albums again. E wasnt a emcee, But thanks to Cube, D.O.C. and many others writing his rhymes, It made him sound tight on the mic and thats what made Eazy Duz it a classic. Their presesences are missed badly on 5051 Home 4 the Sick which was one of the first EPs released from Eazy and it received lukewarm results despite its Gold sales.

187 Dr Dre Killa would soon followup a year later and it was well embraced from the streets. Real Muthaphuckin Gz was a underground hit because he was retaliating against Dre, Snoop and Death Row. 187 Um Dr Dre Killa went platinum off the strength of that song alone and proved that Eazy wasnt gonna let Death Row run him out of the game. Eazy has proved that with the sales that he has a loyal following so he had to carry the label on his back because the rest of those niggas that was signed wasnt selling.

But it was gonna take more than that because money was running real low and the company were still going through alot of rough times . Eazy broke away from Jerry Heller because Heller was have supposed to have tooken half of the money from Eazy and thats why nothing but EP's have been released from the label for that year. Its one of the reasons why some albums had to be shelved because there was no money for marketing, mixing, and promoton. Lawsuits were playing a huge effect as well as E would have to pay 58,000 a year for a girl he fathered in Nebraska and former group Po Broke and Lonely would sue Eazy as well.

Eazy had no choice but to continue to rap because his label was dwindling. They scored a hit with 187 Dre Killa but it was gonna take more than that because Death Row was just killing the West Coast game at the time and the fact that Dre and Cube werent around played a huge effect in E's lyrics really made Eazy's once entertaining verses sometimes forgettable. Gangsta Dresta and BG Knocc Out would join Ruthless and would continue to beef with Death Row but their album wouldnt come out from Ruthless.

Things would brightened up for the label once Eazy discovered 5 talented fast rhyming emcees from Ohio who go by the name Bone Thugs N Harmony. It was do or die for Ruthless, If the Bone project flops then it was a wrap for Ruthless. But Bone suprised alot of heads when their single Thuggish Ruggish Bone went Gold and the EP Creep N on a Comeup would soon go platinum. It was what Eazy and Ruthless needed to stay in the game and the success of the BoneThugs album helped a great deal.

Eazy would soon die of Aids around the time of the release of Bone Thug's 2nd album, It was so little time to right a business plan because He has gotten sick and died so fast. When Eazy died, The company died with it. Bone Thugs 2nd album was the highest selling record in Ruthless along with Eazy's last studio album Straight off the Streets of Muthafuckin Compton which would also go platinum but after the Bone thugs album, Things would never be the same.

Ruthless today is in the same state as Death Row Records if not worser, Their main selling artists Bone Thugs are gone, MC Ren left a while back to sign with Guerilla Funk, and King T who signed with the label still hasnt released a album so he bounced as well. Ruthless would have still been standing strong had they capitalized off the momentium of the second Bone album but instead that bitch Tomica Wright dicked all of the artists and tried to keep them on the label at that. Ruthless is pretty much deceased right now because they havent had a hit since Bone Thugs last album and that came out in 2002. Had Eazy lived, I think the label would been on the level of Bad Boy is right now but thanks to greed, backstabbing, and empowerment, Ruthless is dead as of now and I dont see them coming back anytime soon.

Ruthless Records died when Eazy-E died. I will always support Ruthless Records becuase of the legacy Eazy left and the power Ruthless had in the past with Above The Law, Kokane, Menajahtwa, Steffon, Tab & Davillon, Pistol, and ect. The projects that Tomika has released over the past few years have been mediocre including the Baby S and Bone Thugs N Harmony releases. The Baby S project only has a few tight tracks and the BTNH "Thug World Order" tried to sound too mainstream. Tomika ras basically run Ruthless into the ground with these artists she is signing. Ruthless is trying to push two new artists/groups at this time "Spymob" & "Na'shay" (www.ruthlessrecords.com). I have not heard anything from these two groups/artists, but it is not getting any buzz or radio play.

I wish Ruthless Records would put out a LP with all new tracks from old Ruthless Artists coming together celebrating the legacy of Ruthless and the Legacy of Eazy-E. Artists including: Kokane, Above The Law, NWA(Mc Ren, Dr Dre, Yella, Cube), Menajahtwa, Bone Thugs N Harmony, DOC, Michelle', JJ Fad, HWA, Pistol, Tab & Da Villon, Steffon, Penthouse Players Clique, Black Eye Peas aka Atabn Klann, and ect.

Jerry Heller was still around at Ruthless the time Bone Thugs N Harmony "Creepin On Ah Come Up was released in 1994. Jerry heller left shortly after that. Jerry Heller was a sneaky person. He is the reason NWA split up and Ruthless was $10 million in the hole at the time of Eazy's death. Rumor has it that Heller is the one who snatched up all the remaining Eazy Tracks at the time of Eazy's death.

Rest In Peace Eazy-E & The Old Ruthless Records

And here is to the future of the New Ruthless.

Where can I get a Ruthless discography? I'd like to see all the releases that came out on Ruthless Records back in the days
This is taken from www.eazy-e.com

This gives the group/artist info and the LP's they have released. This does not include the Eazy-E and NWA discography. At www.allmusic.com, you could pull up info about a record company and get the complete discography. If you search, you could find the complete Ruthless discography.

Above The Law isn't about being outside the law, its about being superior to it mentally. Above the Law is Hutch aka Cold 187um, KMG and Total K-Oss. Together they paved a road of constructive ideals for their peers by tearing others down. They were focused on turning a negative into a positive. They began as gangsta rappers, telling stories about the lifestyle they knew best on their debut LP, Livin' Like Hustlers. Then came Black Mafia Life, which after a taste of success on their own terms, showed them there could be a better system. Uncle Sam's Curse proved their hoodside brio was about exceeding the limits set by the system. The results were a passionate, funky and strong commitment to rap music and the community that made them.

In 1988, a group of hip-hop dancers from downtown Los Angeles called themselves Tribal Nation. Still in high school, a few of the members, inspired by the East Coast rap movement of A Tribe Called Quest, KRS-One and Public Enemy, began writing their own raps in addition to dancing to other people's. They eventually broke off from Tribal Nation to form their own rap crew, A Tribe Beyond A Nation, or the ATBAN Klann. According to group member Will OneX, "A Tribe Beyond A Nation is a state of mind." Simplified the concept is: A Tribe is about staying true to your roots--knowing yourself and Beyond A Nation means to go out and be successful without getting caught up and trapped by it.

Blood of Abraham is Benyad and Mazik, two 21-year-old rappers who share a singular vision of positivity based not on some naive idealism but on mutual regard for all cultures, people and religion. The group's brand of hardcore rap consisted not of gory street stories, but of simple truths communicated from a universal perspective. Their debut album, Future Profits, put a message across without sacrificing their musical integrity.

The Bone thugs-n-harmony saga began in 1993 when Layzie, Krazyie, Flesh, Wish and Bizzy, broke and hungry, but loaded with talent, confidence and the bravado to try anything to achieve success, boarded a bus to Los Angeles. Their destination was the offices of Ruthless Records, home to the legendary rap group NWA. Bone auditioned over the phone but Eazy didn't get back with them. When Bone heard that Eazy-E was doing a show in their hometown, they scraped their money together and hustled back to Cleveland. They auditioned live for Eazy backstage and he signed them on the spot. Within weeks they were in the studio recording their '94 debut EP, Creepin' On Ah Come Up. They turned the hip-hop nation onto a fresh new style of rap and in the process sold over two million copies of Creepin', fueled by their hit single, "Thuggish Ruggish Bone." Bone thugs-n-harmony followed with the '95 release of the five times platinum LP, E. 1999 Eternal which debuted at #1 on top of the pop charts. The group made history when their hit single, "Tha Crossroads," tied a record the Beatles set in 1964 as the fastest rising single on the charts. Bone thugs-n-harmony recently won the 1997 Grammy Award for Best Rap Duo or Group and the 1997 Soul Train Music Award for Best Video, "Tha Crossroads."

Kid Frost is not only a trailblazer of Chicano rap but a West Coast hip-hop pioneer. Frost, the son of an ex-gangbanger, established himself through a hard work ethic. Early on, he was signed to rap at Florentine Gardens in Hollywood every Saturday at midnight. His songs made Frost one of the first west coast rappers to make it to wax. In 1994, Frost entered negotiations with Ruthless Records and the result was his debut album, Smile Now, Die Later.

Hoez With Attitude (H.W.A.) offered scintillating rhymes and sexy get-ups. But that's not all. These three striking young ladies - Kim Kenner, Tonja Kenner and Robin Nelson - had more than just sex on their minds. What's most explicit about their rhymes was their intent: creating an atmosphere where men and women could talk frankly and meaningfully about sex, relationships and love.

Although Ruthless Records is synonomous with "rap" music, the label does explore releasing acts within other musical genres. Jimmy Z is a shining example. Jimmy Z teamed up with Dr. Dre to produce funky jazz tracks. "Funky Flute" (the album's most notable track) was a jazzy dance track that featured Dr. Dre. Jimmy Z also played saxophone as he was featured on several of Ruthless' other artists releases.

Everybody knows J.J. Fad. They were one of Eazy-E's biggest successes. And if someone doesn't remember, all you have to say is "Supersonic" and their memories are sure to snap. The boomin' sounds of their chart-topping single was the first release off J.J. Fad's self-titled debut. A platinum best-seller, J.J. Fad became the first female rap group to be nominated for a Grammy award. All told, J.J Fad was one of the most successful dance/party acts of the late 80's.

Kokane was the psychedelic rapper whose hip hop debut, Funk Upon A Rhyme, caused critics to call him a "religious experience." Released in 1994, Kokane's first single, "Slow Burnin' 22.5 Fahrenheit" heated up the charts and transported listeners into a time when lyrics were deep and meaningful

Just scan MC Ren's credentials: 17 years old recruited straight outta Compton, California from high school by Eazy-E to join his trailblazing rap group, NWA. The stern faced rapper became known as the villain in black and also became one of the premiere rappers of the West Coast. Ren's solo career began with a gold industry buzzing EP called Kizz My Black Azz in 1992 followed by his acclaimed 1994 first album, Shock of the Hour featuring "Mayday on the Front Line" from the rap spoof movie, CB4.

Menajahtwa represented the hardcore streets of Compton, but they were not gangsta MC's. The female rap duo made up of Spice and Royal T emerged from the West with their groundbreaking debut, Cha-Licious. With influences like MC Lyte and Ice Cube, Menajahtwa was about serious hip-hop, mic skills and coming correct. No females emerged so cleverly, so bluntly and so in your face.

Michel'le took the music industry by storm when she released her self-titled platinum debut in 1990. Featuring the hit singles "No More Lies" (a platinum seller) and "Nicety," Michel'le became one of the first Ruthless artists to win ASCAP's coveted Pop music award.

Their debut Ruthless Records/Priority release, Paid The Cost, received national attention when their critically acclaimed single, "Explanation of a Playa," was released. The dymamic duo of Playa Hamm and Tweed Cadillac created music with trend-setting lyrics and funky tracks. Their style of rap was unmatched by any other.

Nashville, TN has always been the undisputed capitol of country music. It's hardly the place one would expect to find Pistol, the first rapper from Nashville to make an impact on the music industry. Pistol's rise to the forefront on the Nashville hip-hop scene began on the streets of the Preston-Taylor projects. He honed his rhyme skills by rapping at talent shows, on the playground and around the hood. His album Hittin' Like a Bullet had explosive lyrics that hit hard.

Po' Broke N Lonely was set to be released just prior to Eazy-E's passing. The group would have been Ruthless' first male singing group, primed to join the ranks of Jodeci, Shai and Dru Hill. Their most notable single "Twisted" was released in 1996.

At a time when rap was becoming more serious, the light-heartedness of Steffon was a breath of fresh air. He started out as a dancer for Breeze and the LA Posse. After an appearance on the hip hop show, "Pump It Up," Steffon jokingly asked about giving the producers extra help. This resulted in Steffon co-hosting the show until it ended in 1991. Throughout his career, Steffon had done a lot of work with children which caused a significant effect on the music he would record. His album, Trippin' Wit No Luggage injected positivity into his rap. Most of the songs were laid back, party-oriented west coast funk that included Steffon's humorous side.

The rap duo of Tab N Da Villain was one of Ruthless' acts signed via the joint marketing venture with Relativity Records. Representing the emerging Midwest, the group released its debut project, Do or Die, in the spring of 1995.

Ruthless' version of Teena Marie ("Lady T"), Tairrie B., released her debut album, The Power of a Woman, on Ruthless Records in 1990. She teamed her songwriting talents with producer Quincy D. III to produce the hit single, "Swingin' Wit' T."

The D.O.C. was one of rap's most promising new voices because of his association with NWA and was at the height of his career after penning lyrics and contributing vocals to the group's revoloutionary album, Straight Outta Compton. In 1992, the D.O.C. then released his mind-blowing Dr. Dre-produced album No One Can Do It Better, proving he could more than hold is own on a mircophone. His delivery was sharp and his deep charismatic voice demanded respect.

Ruthless's only psychedelic act, YoMo & Maulkie released their debut project, Are U Xperienced? in 1991. They collaborated with M.C. Yella of NWA to produce such notable tracks as "Watch Out Black Folks," "Are U Experienced?" and "Mama Don't" which features a saxophone solo by labelmate, Jimmy Z

The OG members of NWA were Dre, Eazy, Cube and Arabian Prince. Ren and Yella joined after Dopeman was released. Yella was already tight with Dre from the Wreckin Kru.
