Unfortunately, what the masses recognize as "Hip-hop" is not considered such by most Hip-hop purist's and many others in the "culture" as well. It's sad that these thugs, and money hungry degenerates have taken over what is a genuine cultural movement and has many founding art's that are exploited for profit. Most of us from the old school of the culture are angry that there is no distinction between today's garbage rap (most of it is these days) and the true intelligent, and enlightened attitude of responsible members of the culture with the future of our children and communities in mind and that being the source of our motivation.

Rap music is only a part of Hip-hop culture. As is "Writing" (or graffiti), break-dancing, beat boxing, certain attire, DJ'ing, and slang. Many of which take years of training and most until now had no form of formal training opportunities. Certain vehicle types and music....but the face of the culture to the people in our communities who cannot relate and the rest of the world is what is seen on MTV and heard on the radio. The fact is...almost all record sales and requests for Hip-hop in this country are from middle class white kids and not the real people who represent the culture. We are sorely misrepresented!
Believe that my manner of dress and choice of genre's in my occupation brings much speculation about me as a person and us as a family to many. People see me and think I'm a heathen because of the face they see publicly of people who are supposed to represent my lifestyle. It bothers me to see people in the shopping center turn up a nose because my pants hang low or because my children wear recognizable urban clothing brands.
I cannot and do not condone or support gangs, violence, or any other illegal or immoral aspect of Hip-hop and am disgusted at the rate at which the culture has degraded to bling-bling, rims, killing, and drug sales. Ignorant street punks with no parents and no aspirations of anything better have taken over the public image of the lifestyle and have corrupted it's motives and exploited it's art forms.
Anger and bitterness due to a life lived in a sup-par manner due to circumstances unavoidable can only be used as an excuse for violence for so long. Sadly though...this kind of thinking is not being taught in the community. The lack of positive figures is a major factor but most of these people have at least some basic knowledge of right and wrong generally and should be able to make better choices in content on there own. But until the sales reflect a collective change towards the positive aspects of the culture then there will be someone waiting to supply the demand for ignorance.

as far as your article its beautifully written and almost hit everything on the head but you are missing key points, the thugs and drug degenerates have infiltrated the culture but to some of them this is there only chance of ever bieng a legit or have a chance to turn thier life around i know hip hop saved my life from bieng in the penitentary or dead as many other people will testify, also its therapy to rap about your life and problems you face as a man in these mean and cold streets that the urban youth have to deal with everyday i rather battle you with cd's that a nine milli, also you have to take into fact that the music industry has abadoned the hip hop culture becuase it was teaching but who wants to be preached too? can we blame the kids who buy and listen to rap music? can we blame radio for playing garbage music or taking payola? i belive we all are to blame fans artist usa, racism media, positive images of rappers dont sell records, ie:50 cent get shot go platinum talk about other rappers go platinum,be a teacher like krs1 get ridiculed, hip hop culture has changed kids changed, music changed but programming hasnt our kids have been programmed to walk it out? intead of think it out? to carry a book verses a gun?who's to blame who's at fault is it hip hop or more sinister villians lurky behind the scene ,record companies have choices on what to put out recording artist do to bu the bottom line is if the culture is failing to preserve the culture then its phycological failure not low lifes who have infiltrated the business long long time ago the music industry has always been crooked, but what about the culture?who infiltrated the hip hop culture and made it what it is today? who is the blame, gangster rappers? or the fans or the culture for purchasing it?or radio for playing it?there are a million questions along with a million answers lets hear some solutions instead of blames.......

Much respect for filling the blanks Octavious! I agree 100%. It's extremley complex and it's all our responsibility to debate and converse about it! It's the only way to make change! Thanks for the feedback!

^^Without those middle class whitekids you don't want to include, those records would not be platinum. I don't know man, I know hip hop is a black music, but I always felt it was for the "poor" people even more then that. There is hella "poor" white kids, street cats out there too that are hip hop. As far as the garbage shit, quit buying it, buy real records, record companies don't give a fuck what they selling as long as they selling it. Record sales are falling only because the music is switching formats, pretty soon you'll just cop the record for your MP3 player with JPEG (or whatever) graphics loaded in, instead of a jewel case, people all of a sudden havent stopped liking music. Some of the shit being supported by radio and MTV (which also supports hella homosexual shit) is beyond garbage, you want that shit off there then cats need to start calling them on it and smashing on em. I hear this bullshit all the time "....oh I dont feel his music, but I respect his hustle, he's getting his paper". That's some ho ass bullshit, if his music is f'n garbage his music is f'n garbage!! And if I aint feelin it I aint feelin it!! That don't make me a hater! na'mean? Yank these simple simons out the game so hip hop can be competitive again, where cats ride on their talent and there is no way for wack m'fers to hide behind m'fn dances. F off.

To me....Hip-hop hasn't been a "black" thing for 20 years! I'm white as it get's and have been Hip-hop since I was a child. It's music for the poor and disenfranchised. Your right that those records wouldn't be platinum without those kids...my case in point. Catchy jingles for your ringtone should be kept to tv commercials not celebrated as platinum achievements.
I do agree with much that you said though. Good point.
This thread wasn't meant to induce anger but to start a dialog in the Hip-hop community in order to mull through the way we feel about the culture and it's direction!
Thanks for the comments!

Just to clarify a few things. I don't think anyone said that the foundation of "Rap music" was or wasn't created and founded by the Black community. I was referring to Hip-hop as a culture in America. And that culture is "owned" by the people who live that lifestyle...white, black, yellow, purple...whatever. The Hip-hop community crosses all racial lines in this day in age. The music is merely a part of that lifestyle.
Your point about the music is an excellent one. It hurts my feelings to know that someday those songs that you mentioned might be called classic and it bothers me that there hit's across the world and represent the face of us all to the world.
So let's just get it straight because I have never been racist and would be offended by such an accusation. Sorry if it came off like that.

^^ No doubt! But I think THESE DAYS, it's pretty much evened out to be a mixed culture. People from all walks of life have made great contributions to Hip-hop.
I will agree with you about it's origin's though!
Respect!
