Mista Cane said it better than anyone could!

The problem wit Indie rap is.....................

1.They would rather put more money in graphics than they do in the production of the album.

2.They want to pay for a feature to sell their album than selling the album wit just their skill.

3.They would rather save money by cuttin corners than being a broke motha fucka for believin in himself and spendin every last dolla he has on his project to make it the tightest it can be.

the problem is an oversaturation of mediocre music not that the artists arent good but I think more time and eeffort need to be put into projects

muthafuccas that love to hate. Everybody wanna be"the man" so while they are on that quest for that status, most of them AT THE SAME TIME are doin all in thier power so that YOU dont come up.

cats who think they above folks cause they rapped with so-and-so, or they had a feature from so-and-so. I could give a fuck less about you you rapped with. We all in the same business, making records and sellin them muthafuccas. People be in it for different reasons tho, some cause thats the only way they can pull hoes, or have any type of status, some cause its the fad to be a rapper, some cause they just like the perks that come along with it. or like me, getting what money I can get, payin bills, taking care of kids with it.

THE PROBLEM WITH THE INDIE RAP GAME TODAY IS....

... we keep having to have threads like this in order to make us think we're getting somewhere. As if BART is the center of the indie rap universe.

*pulls out his reality stick --- smacks everyone on BART with it*

... WE'RE NOT ...

THE PROBLEM WITH THE RAP GAME IN GENERAL (for the cats trying to go from Indie to Major) TODAY IS....

... most cats (artists) aren't going about the business end of things the right way. 86% (just a made up number) of these so called 'artists', 'producers', 'ceos', etc .. have no management, can't tell you what a first use agreement is, they can't tell you what a work for hire agreement is, they ask "What the hell is a ASCAP", then they ask "What do I need an entertainment lawyer for?"... they got all this material (music) and have nobody to help them push it because they feel they have to do everything themselves so that when they're magically discovered (magically being the operative word) they won't have to pay anybody along the way or afterward... There's so much to the business end of this shit that you're really SUPPOSED to do before releasing a record it overwhelms people and puts them in the mindset that "maybe I'll be that one that can do it without having to go through all of the bullshit that everybody else had to go through". You gotta be willing to fully invest in yourself if you want to succeed. When I say invest, I mean money wise, time wise, everything. Sacrifices have to be made to make progress. To those that don't feel they have to make sacrifices and investments .. well .. sorry for ya. Better snag a 9 to 5 while there are still some out there. I'd bore you with more details but, you get the picture.

I personally don't care about the oversaturation anymore cause that has done it's damage. 97% (another made up number, but most likely pretty accurate) of the artists out here aren't selling over 5000 units per project and that's due to a lot of things, one being oversaturation of the market.

These threads really don't do anything to help the progress of the "movement". They just give people a way to vent (nothin wrong with that) but there are never any real answers that come from these threads. I say, "EVERY MAN FOR HIMSELF". If you make it and you're able, then you come back and get your folks.

peace

And another thing ...

I know everybody got there lives outside of the music business. But if you're actually trying to "make it" in the music business, you gotta let all of that extra ciricular (sp?) bullshit go. For example, if you got a weed habit and you spendin a grip on weed, you gotta put that shit down - that money can go to paying for some legal consultation which may be more useful to you than being high. All that street shit, that shit gotta go. Mufuckas eventually gotta grow up and that just goes back to makin sacrifices.

Ok I'm done ...

that's true Mr. Peete.. a lot of folks place too much emphasis on message boards and the overall thoughts from people on the message boards... back in 99... when we dropped our debut album ... we sold a nice amount thru mail orders via BART... about 300 or so... that was definitely surprising.. nowadayz we'd be lucky to sell 50 copies... times have changed... people have to go back to grassroots campaigning and the more visual promotions aspect of things in order to survive and gain attention.

for the ones comin' up that dont have respect for the ones that have paved the way.

personally alot of times when i have arrived at a show (none Nickatina shows) cats be hootin' and hollerin' and think im some groupie when i walk-in and won't let me through unless i give em sum love and basically cats need to get over they ego and respect others and stop acting like you the shit just cuz u got a slot at a show.

alotta times people that boast and talk the most about this and that -- really aint doing a damn thing.

some cats that have been in the game and gained their respect, i personally think have made some fucked up business decisions and don't know how to use their money. especially the fact most indy cats run bolo and need to do shit on their own they got bad biz tactics and don't know how to hustle this shit right.

cats get hungry and just go for anything as well. just remember what you're worth and dont let the game play you. <-- people forget that and just get green eyes and end up BROKE. we got too much talent out here and the main reason cats cant come up is cuz they don't do well business-wise.

and some cats think they're worth more than they really are.

If you have an INVESTOR... remember their money talks and your bullshit walks. It takes teamwork to make it crack right.. but it takes money to even get the ball rolling.

some people don't pull their weight and expect to eat....
The MC'in part is probably the funnest and one of the easiest (not belittling writing or delivery talents or the artist's hard work in the booth) but actually selling and convincing buyers to buy & stock the product is a different story. Good luck to all in 04'
