Breaking News: Man dies after resisting arrest at traffic stop

Police at scene

At about 5:15 p.m. two Baltimore city police officers stopped a car for a traffic stop in the 1300 block of Kitmore Road, according to Deputy Commissioner Jerry Rodriguez. During the stop, the police attempted to speak with an individual in the car who they suspected of possessing drugs, though Rodriguez would not confirm if it was the passenger or driver.

One of the men fled the car and police gave chase, according to Rodriguez. The man struggled with police, who put out three calls for help from fellow officers. One Morgan State patrol car responded to the call.

During the struggle, according to Rodriguez, the officers “became aware of medical distress with the individual.” Though the officers reportedly used a defibrillator kept in a patrol car, the man was taken to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead, according to Rodriguez. In addition, it appeared that one of the Baltimore city police cars collided with the Morgan State vehicle at the scene.

A witness who saw the traffic stop from in front of her home elaborated on the incident in the interview below. She told City Paper a very different story, saying “they beat this man to death.” She provided video of what she said was the officers “trying to resuscitate the man.”

MTA officer shoots man near Mondawmin Mall
July 23, 2013|By Justin Fenton, The Baltimore Sun

A Maryland Transit Administration police officer shot a man in the foot at the Mondawmin Mall subway stop Tuesday afternoon as he ran toward her while fleeing officers who had pulled over his vehicle, police said.

The shooting was reported at about 3:30 p.m, at the subway station near the intersection of Liberty Heights Avenue and Reisterstown Road.

Terry Owens, a spokesman for the MTA, said police saw a white Ford Taurus driving through the bus loop at the Mondawmin transit center, which Owens said is against the law. The driver stopped, but as officers spoke to him he jumped out and fled, Owens said.

An officer responding to the scene saw the man running toward her, and she ordered him to stop. He continued running, and she discharged her service weapon. The officer was not immediately named, but has nine years experience on the force, Owens said.

Homicide detectives from the Baltimore Police Department will investigate the shooting, per protocol, Owens said, while MTA police will conduct their own administrative review.

The MTA police department has 150 sworn officers and has jurisdiction over public transportation.
