Some 1920's Sicilian Mafia stuff .........

When feudalism ended in Italy, the government had a hard time giving protection to their constituents thus forcing wealthy landlords to seek protection from the Mafia, an all male organization who successfully and quickly rose to power through bootlegging and extortion. The Sicilian Mafia actually started out as an honorable and legitimate organization that quickly became notorious criminals as they rose to power. Back then, a member of the Mafia was otherwise known as “Man of Honor”.
The citizens were alarmed and afraid of the Mafia that they usually give in to the extortions and were forced to buy protection from them. It was in the 1920s when Benito Mussolini declared an all out war against the Mafia and its affiliates. It was in the mid 1920s when he gave special powers to Cesare Mori to wage war against the Mafia. This included arrests and convictions of more than ten thousand suspected Mafia members including their wives and children. Around 1200 arrested Mafia members were exiled or executed without trial. Mori was not entirely successful in crushing the Mafia but he was nevertheless successful in reducing their numbers and forcing some of them to migrate to the States.
Some of the illegitimate businesses that members of the Mafia have entered in the 1920s aside from extortion are bootlegging which includes offshore business transactions regarding liquor distributions.
Notable Mafia members like Joseph Barbara arrives in New York in the early parts of 1920s while Ignazio Lupo, who was serving a sentence for counterfeiting, was released during the Harding Administration and he promised to return to Sicily.
On the other hand, many Sicilian Mafiosi have illegally fled to the United States during these times and helped establish the La Cosa Nostra or the American branch of the Mafia. One of these Mafiosi who went to the United States was Lucky Marciano who is credited for making the American Mafia what it s today. He used the Sicilian Mafia as the model for the La Cosa Nostra and became the liaison between the two branches of Mafia when he was deported back to Sicily.
