NBA referees will have more reasons to issue technical fouls next season.

At the referees' annual meeting in Jersey City, N.J., on Thursday, the league announced the guidelines for technical fouls will expand to include "overt" player reactions to referee calls.

Referees have been instructed to call a technical for:

• Players making aggressive gestures, such as air punches, anywhere on the court.

• Demonstrative disagreement, such as when a player incredulously raises his hands, or smacks his own arm to demonstrate how he was fouled.

• Running directly at an official to complain about a call.

• Excessive inquiries about a call, even in a civilized tone.

In addition, referees have been instructed to consider calling technicals on players who use body language to question or demonstrate displeasure, or say things like, "Come on!" They can also consider technicals for players who "take the long path to the official", walking across the court to make their case.

For the 2006-07 season, the NBA announced a similar crackdown, but the effect was short-lived. Officials say this time they expect the new policies to stick.

Ron Johnson, the NBA's senior vice president of referee operations, said audience research was a major factor behind the most recent change.

"Our players are more personally connected to fans than any other sports," Johnson said. "We don't have masks. ... There's nothing you can hide on the expression of an NBA players. ... People expect hockey players to be fighting. They expect baseball managers to be kicking dirt on umpires. But that's not our game. That's not what our fans want. They tell us in many many ways and I think we have to adjust to meet the needs of our league and our fans. It's a business."

Some reactions will not be penalized, Johnson said. "Heat of the moment" reactions, like a defensive player briefly raising his hands to show he had proper position, will be acceptable.

Johnson also said players showing frustration with themselves will not be penalized, and players will still be able to discuss the game with the referees.

"We want referees and players to talk to understand each other," Johnson said. "If it's infrequent and not distracting, that's fine."

NBA coaches were informed of the changes last week. Beginning Sept. 29th, the league will make presentations on the new rules to the players in all NBA cities.

"We don't want our players looking like they're complaining about calls on the court because it makes them look like complainers," Johnson said. "You do that six times in a game, it really starts to look bad on television. A lot of these things may not look as bad in the arena. But on TV, when attention is focused on it, it stands out."

That's weak.... Basketball is an emotional game. Rasheed Wallace wouldn't have made it through the season without getting suspended with these rules.

Weak!!!!!!

Like I said the NBA has been gay as fuck for a while now. I can't even watch the shit every time someone like Kobe or Lebron goes to the basket it's an automatic foul, can't even play defense no more.

Now with the more frequent use of T's, it's even easier to fix games and shave points. Bet the crooked refs are loving this shit.

You already see some refs call T's FOR NO REASON WHATSOEVER so this is just more of a free pass. Oh he looked at me funny or he looked at the ground like he was going to hit it.

I watch NBA religiously and I totally agree with these rules. The crying about fouls has gotten to ridiculous levels. These grown ass millionaire men look like fucking cry babies. Take your foul and move around. Some players (PAUL PIERCE) use the lengthy civilized discussion or walking the long way to the ref just to catch a breather. I understand there are alot of dubious calls, and in the heat of the moment players will react, especially as the season progresses or in the playoffs when each game means more.

They should try maybe having a moderator who serves each team on the sidelines and the players can express their grivences with him about the calls, and the refs can talk with the moderator during timeouts and shit to know what to look for.

Another thing to help might be to have a video referee, posted up on the sidelines with a lil tv set and the ability to instantly rewind and zoom in on plays. Not to act as another ref on the court making calls, but to overturn bad calls and quick decisions on other questional calls where refs normally meet up and talk it out in a drawn out process.

Also Flopping needs to be added to the new Technical Foul rules. Its getting outrageous.

yeah the whining is out of control, mothafuckas always cryen about getting fouled and it not getting called and cry when they commit a foul and just upset the ref actually called it. What should be a technical foul is slapping your teammate five in between free throws, that shit is just ridiculous now

I don't think he'd make it through a quarter of it now that you mentioned it. They should call it the Rasheed Tech.

Basketball is tame compared to some other sports(baseball, football, hockey) when it comes to complaining about fouls or disagreements of calls. Just look at all the NFL coaches cussin out the referees all the time over a penalty. And i don't even need to go in to what baseball and hockey lets you do. Them muthafucka's in the front rows probably get a lil scared when a nigga like Rasheed starts to get mad Lol.
