Actually they wanna make it manditory not just a draft like they used to have which was more like a reverse version of the lotto. This in theory, will be set up to make everyone have to serve.

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- A Democratic lawmaker said Sunday he will introduce a bill in the next session of Congress to make military service mandatory.

Rep. Charles Rangel, D-New York, said such legislation could make members of Congress more reluctant to authorize military action.

"I'm going to introduce legislation to have universal military service to let everyone have an opportunity to defend the free world against the threats coming to us," Rangel said on CNN's "Late Edition."

"I'm talking about mandatory service."

The Korean War veteran has accused the Bush administration and some fellow lawmakers of being too willing to go to war with Iraq.

In October, he voted against a joint resolution authorizing military action against Iraq. It passed 296-133 in the House and 77-23 in the Senate.

"When you talk about a war, you're talking about ground troops, you're talking about enlisted people, and they don't come from the kids and members of Congress," he said.

"I think, if we went home and found out that there were families concerned about their kids going off to war, there would be more cautiousness and a more willingness to work with the international community than to say, 'Our way or the highway.' "

Rangel did not provide specifics of his proposal.

shit, i'll be a cook, thats about it! no for real, i was thinkin about goin into the army anyway, thats my only option, but fuck!!! i dont wanna die for a country that dont give a damn about me! if i died today, i would just be another dead kid, if i died in the army, i would just be another dead soldier. so forget that crap. im my moms only son, and one of the few in my family to bring down my last name. so i dont wanna die. i dont care who rules who. they all gonna get what they deserve...........on judgement day.

im gunna join the Air Force when i get outta High Skool..but i dont like that mandatory shit...other ppl have plains for ther lives...and that dosent include Military...i dont think it will have a chance of passin ne wayz

the guy is kinda crazy i heard him interviewed on the Sean Hannity radio show, and the Hannity and Colmes TV news show and on Donahue. and he says that people joined the Armed Forces wanting to make a career for themselves and never expected to go to war? whats up with that.

anyways it will wont pass under a republican controlled Congress and White House. (so alote of you guys can thank the republicans. you know the ones you hate so much). i think i heard somewhere that we have approximately 2.5 million troops so i doubt their would be any need for a draft.

blood the senator is doing it as a somewhat practical joke and if the draft is brought back ppl will be a lot more hesitant about just jumping into wars causally. He wants ppl to realize how real war is. SO that everytime we go 2 war we'll basically be saying its a war where our sons r worth dieing for.

ya i know. its not as a practical joke (i would hope our representatives had better thing to do while on the job than to make practical jokes) but it is to get across the message you stated above.

ohh and by the way he is a US congressman from New York not a senator

I am already in the military....

I joined before 9/11 and I also joined before the attack on the USS Cole. Actually, I was in basic training when the attack on the Cole went down. I have slightly less than 4 years remaining unless I re-enlist...

I am leaving in 9 dayz for boot camp....
I agree a maditory service is not the way to go... I SERIOUSLY doubt it will be passed...and with as many people as i have seen at the Military Enlistment Processing stations...I SERIOUSLY doubt there will be a need to institute a draft.
