“Do I contradict myself?
Very well then I contradict myself,
(I am large, I contain multitudes.)”
-- Walt Whitman

“I’m a walking contradiction,
Like bullets and love mixing”
-- The Coup

The opening lines of The Coup’s new album, Pick A Bigger Weapon, speak of contradiction. It is from between one of modern life’s central juxtapositions -- the primary forces of sensual, emotional love and brutal economic reality -- “bullets and love” -- that The Coup’s frontman/auteur Boots Riley draws his material for the most lyrically and musically ambitious album of his career. Riley’s often wildly comedic storytelling takes a stance in American art that embraces the ambiguities of our vast and tormented history, rather than seeking some definitive “truth” about the American experience. Think of Twain’s travel adventure of a boy or Melville’s reworking of the nautical yarn. Theirs is a style of twists and turns, sudden leaps from grand philosophy to minute prosaic detail, comedy to tragedy -- a tale that begins as one thing and ends as something radically different.

In “Tiffany Hall,” what starts as a playful tribute to a girl from school, over a slow, carnal groove that brings to mind the best of Marvin Gaye, suddenly turns sobering as Boots learns she has died from complications following cosmetic surgery to reduce her curves. “I Love Boosters!” launches over a funky march as a broad, comic ode to shoplifting and then halfway through shifts to something far subtler, finally offering a tender tribute to the women who clothed him fashionably, despite economic hardship. The agitated funk underpinning of the track only heightens the workaday detail of the surprisingly uncontroversial way of life portrayed by the song.

Pick A Bigger Weapon weaves these contradictions into some of the freshest audioscapes The Coup have ever produced. Backed by a stellar band that includes Audioslave's Tom Morello, Dwayne Wiggins, and veterans of Parliament-Funkadelic, the Gap Band, Toni! Tony! Toné!, Jesse Johnson, and Frankie Beverly and Maze, the album’s uniquely bent grooves point to "Dirty Mind"-era Prince, late-80s Too Short, and the trunk-rattling hyphy sonics of the New Bay movement.

In the end, Riley offers us nothing more complicated than two people trying to snatch one more night of peace, love and sanity by leaving what may be his only mission statement to co-conspirator Silk-E. Her plaintive vocal on “BabyLet’sHaveABabyBeforeBushDoSomethin’Crazy” croons a wish for love in the time of impending apocalypse. The track captures the hope, the doomed sadness, and the contradictory emotions of daily life for much of America. “We might never get our money right…”

"All we have on earth are our seconds and minutes, and in order to survive, we're forced to sell that time. We sell our lives off to the highest bidder," says Boots. "The question is how would we use those seconds if we had control of that time?"

First Real Post
Current mood: excited

Alright.

So this is my first real blog...

It's kind of a weird format to me, so give me a couple of posts till I'm able to loosen up.

Our new album, Pick A Bigger Weapon, is finally coming out on April 25th, 2006. For those of you who have been following along, I'm sorry for the false release dates that came before this. I'm finally working with a real label that understands, more than our previous labels did, about promotion and distribution. We're just making sure we have enough time for publicity and promotion.

XLR8R says it's our "best work to date". It's hard for me to compare our albums in that way, but I definitely feel like we upped our ante on lyrics and production. It also feels a little more concept-oriented as a whole, partly due to a storyline that runs through some of the songs and partly due to me allowing my personal life to invade my work instead of distract me from it. Being that for some people this will be the first album they've heard from The Coup, I'd have to say that I'm proud to have this album represent what our music is about.

Our problems in the past (besides being somewhat shut out of the industry at times for our political beliefs) have been distribution and marketing. I'm so tired of the fact that people have problems finding our albums in the stores. When someone is trying to buy your album
and the store doesn't have it, if they're a fan of your music, they'll look for it somewhere else or come back another day. But, if they have just heard about us or they are just a little interested (which account for many record sales), they'll buy something else and forget about us for a while.

On the marketing side I'll be putting out a call for promotion help to those of you that are interested in helping us get out there more. I'll speak more on that later.
(BTW- A big shot out to the folks that have already been getting the word out about us. It is VERY appreciated. We need all the promo we can get!)

We will also do another headlining tour in May followed up by a very high profile spot on a summer tour which I cannot devulge anymore details about at this time.

We are working on the details of a video for this album. The song hasn't been picked yet, although it will probably be our next single, which is called "We Are The Ones".

There's also a song on the album called "Captain Sterling's Little Problem" which is also the theme song to a great new documentary about U.S. soldiers in Vietnam rebelling against their officers (which was apparently a common occurrence) called "Sir, No Sir" (www.sirnosir.com).

I plan on posting regularly, so check back...

Peace!

Black Thought from The Roots invited me to their pre-grammy party at the Key Club in Hollywood. It had been a while since I had been to one of those star studded shin-digs (purposely, I'm a little jaded about that type of thing) and I have a new album to promote, so I went down there. Once there, I was comforted to see familiar faces, like Martin Luther, Goapele, Talib and his fiance EQ (later, I ran into E-40). Before the show started, I walked out back into the alley thinking that maybe Tariq was back there kickin' it or somethin', and suddenly I heard "Ay, that's my man from The Coup!" I looked over and almost froze cuz it was Dave Chapelle. DAVE MUTHAFUCKIN' CHAPELLE. We exchanged some "I like your work, man"'s and he started commenting on, and asking about, the Party Music album cover. To tell you the truth, I don't really remember to much of what he was saying at that second because my brain kept chanting "Dave Chapelle Knows Who I Am!" over and over. I know at one point he said, in a complimentary way, that I am a "crazy muthafucka" and that he has to watch his back for FBI snipers when he's around me. I told him that I already know his brother because my baby's (see last entry) mother's family are friends with his family. That sounds even stupider as I read that back than it actually did at the time, trust me. He then said, sincerely, "Oh shit, you like family then. Small world. SMALL world. So as far as the FBI is concerned, I'm related to the nigga that predicted 9/11! That explains a lot of shit!" Then I started thinking "Wow. Dave Chapelle REALLY knows who I am!"

Later, I waited for my chance to get some mic time on stage with The Legendary Roots Crew but I was caught up in the music, I didn't wanna crowd, so I played the back while I watched Badu, Common, Talib, Bushwick Bill, and David Banner do their thing. While David Banner, the last of that bunch, was on, Black Thought came over and said "Ay man, I didn't even see you all that time! If you tryna get on the mic, you gotta come over here and signal me. You goin' up?" I said yeah, and waited in the appropriate spot. Just then, Common came back and started tellin' everybody "Snoop is here. He GOTTA go on. Let's put him on." Snoop walked on the stage, freestyled off the dome for about 20 minutes as he passed out blunts to the crowd, and tore the whole place down with the tightest off-the-head lyrics I heard in a long while. Needless to say, the show was over, Hip-hop-wise, at that point. The Roots got off the stage and I missed my chance. But I found out that Dave Chapelle knows who I am, and that was worth the trip. That and seeing Big Daddy Kane perform.

Peace!
Boots
Keep checking The coup's myspace page, as Boots will be posting on it quite often. I haven't bought a cd since Party music, but I know i'll be buying this one. I've been anticipating it for a long ass time now. Glad he hooked up with epitaph.

Hey,
This is Boots from The Coup,
Below is a form letter that my management company wrote up. Since I’m short on time I’m just cutting and pasting it and sending it to everyone that responded to my bulletin. It only has the cities on the west coast so if you’re not on the west coast, please let someone know who is.

We will be adding more cities (Denver-on my birthday 4/1, Chicago, cities on the east coast and probably ATL) for the week after, but I’ll have to get back at you with that info.

If you are somewhere way out of the range of where we’re going- we really need you. Send us your mailing address to the email listed in the form letter and we will mail you out flyers, stickers, flats, and posters. (Please don’t request more than you will actually use because, as usual, we’re on a low budget.)

One of the many things we’re gonna need help with is in-store displays. We will get the okay from your local record store for you to make a display using materials we supply. We’ll probably do some kind of contest or something where the tightest display wins something. We’re figuring that out now…

Thank you for helping us out with this… I’m excited to let everyone hear this album. I hear through the grapevine that music critics and journalists are saying they “love the new album”, but I can’t wait to see what the public reaction is.

Thanks again!
Peace!
Boots

(The letter with the info is below.)
