NEW YORK (CNN/Money) - Revised changes to overtime rules proposed by the Bush administration will still fail to protect overtime pay for 6 million workers, according to a new study

http://money.cnn.com/2004/07/14/news/economy/overtime/index.htm

July 14—At least 6 million workers will lose their right to overtime pay under final Bush administration rules scheduled to take effect Aug. 23, according to a new Economic Policy Institute (EPI) analysis released July 14—one day after former high-ranking Labor Department officials reported that the new overtime rules will substantially erode the overtime rights of America’s workers.

Under the new rules, workers who earn as little as $23,660 per year—about $5,000 above the poverty line for a family of four—could see their jobs reclassified as ineligible for overtime pay.

_____________________________

The NLRB (national labor relations board) that is supposed to be there to protect the rights of workers has been sending memos to employers for almost a year now explaining to them the ways they can use to get around the exemptions and avoid paying overtime even to those who ARE eligible under the new rules.

Labor Dept. offers ways not to pay overtime

more

BTW, anyone want to guess who the top lawyer for the Labor Department is? Eugene Scalia...son of SCOTUS Justice Fat Tony Scalia.

Sure phil, the Labor department and conservative think tanks say “THIS WILL NOT AFFECT ANYONE UNDER THE 100000 INCOME”

At least 6 million workers will lose their right to overtime pay

Under the new rules, workers who earn as little as $23,660 per year—about $5,000 above the poverty line for a family of four—could see their jobs reclassified as ineligible for overtime pay.

The Labor Department is giving employers tips on how to avoid paying overtime to some of the 1.3 million low-income workers who would become eligible under new rules expected to be finalized early this year.

Among the options for employers: cut workers' hourly wages and add the overtime to equal the original salary, or raise salaries to the new $22,100 annual threshold, making them ineligible.

Essentially, employees would be working more hours for the same pay.

Keep blindly following your leader. "Nothing he does is bad. Everything is good. I'm a worthless drone."

This was part of that b.s omnibus spending bill which they passed a couple of months ago, some of the other parts of the bill make it so that the FCC is 'deregulated' allowing the major media conglomorates to consolidate from 6 down to 5, or 5 down to 4 (i.e. an even less diversified and more skewed media), also the forieng meat labeling industry has been 'deregulated' as well, i.e. there is no rule that forces the meat to label is country of origin (mad cow anyone?), it also decided to put some insane amount of tax money towards "special interest groups in certain regions" like the $2,000,000 first tee program to have enough 'free' tee's for evey person whether golfer or not, man, woman & child (in Fla.) here are how some of the other funds are allocated

FROM THE SAME ARTICLE 206

""""It said that the only workers who may lose overtime under the new rules are some individuals who earn more than $100,000 a year.

The EPI did say that another 400,000 employees who work overtime will now be paid for it, but added that pay for these workers would not be indexed for inflation, so that it will protect fewer workers over time.

I'm going to pull a tadou and allege that the Labor Dept. and conservative think tanks are actually a tool for John Kerry. Your findings are very disputable. Even though I have quoted no sources, I will still allege politicization of this data.
