every producer should have basic music theory knowledge you should atleast know how to play one REAL instrument if you wanna be in this game. having that musical experiance before you hit a keyboard helps alot. otherwise youll just be another run of mill producer who makes beats by hitting random keys.

there aint no soul in this new age music, everything sounds really computerized and robotic now with no melody what so ever. need to bring back melodies and put some soul back into this shit

I saw that same show. Mel Gibson was on that night also. I think it is a great idea and hell yeah he is on point. Why would he be jealous? He has mastered more instruments than you or I have fingers. He has talent out the ass and then some. I think live instruments are essential to music. It gives a better feel. I do my shit live.

I dont think technology has really flipped the game. It COULD in the future, but I dont think we are at that point yet. Yeah Pro Tools is out but Pro Tools doesnt map out your patterns, layer, mix, pan, etc. That needs to come from the PRODUCER or whomever.

Producers and musicians are two different things first of all. I don't agree that every producer should know how to play atleast one instrument. While a lot of producers are also musicians, a lot of them arn't. As much as I would like to, I can't honestly say being a musician makes a person a better producer. Musicians on the other hand, obviously can't be musicians if they don't know how to play anything.

Theres music in math, music in nature, music & sound all around us man, not to mention the more you exercise your creative side, the better. Because of that I think everyone can benefit from learning how to play an instrument, especially kids. It's just good for the soul.

Now, has technology changed music? Hell yes, theres no doubt about it! Technology has brought us to a point where it can generate an entire song based on a couple root notes you play. It's given us the chance to create, work with & manipulate sound in a way that was never before possible.

While a great tool for those who are truely gifted in music (who are very few), technology is very much a double-edged sword as it opens the door for people who don't care to learn and/or respect the art of sound.

i can play an instrument (viola) but i dont think its necessary, i think he should be more concearned with saving school music programs in general, having music classes in school had a huge impact on the musical path i have chosen, and i think it has alot of impact on alot of children, i mean you could hand out a flute and a guitar to every kid in the nation, but who is going to teach them?

ill agree with Sick Wid It that being a musician dosnt make you a better producer, hell i saw an autistic kid on tv who could play 15 different instruments as close to perfect as you could possibly play, but could he take that instrument and create an original piece of music? no, could he tell someone else how and when to play it? no. but expanding your knowledge never killed anyone, and some music theory will probably do you good.

i knew a guy who had years of musical schooling, and to be honest with you, he can sit and have a conversation with you all day about theory, but when it comes time to make an original piece, hes instruments collect dust....why? because hes to busy trying to make it how it SHOULD sound instead of the way he WANTS it to sound.

IMO, a producer either has to be a musician, or have a trusted musician on hand that the producer can communicate with well. At the end of the day, the producer's vision must get made into a song, which means the the producer has to play the music himself, or have musicians who know what the producer wants. But often times, if you want something done right (or atleast a certain way), you gotta do it yourself. A good musician that you mesh well with is sometimes hard to find...

Real "musicians" will *NEVER* DIE! They will always be around. Just like vintage gear. I see no problem with using a computer to make music. Just like I see no problem with a person using a mpc, 61 key workstation, fruity loops or any other sound module/sound generating tool. Embrace technology thats what its here for. I do agree with LEARNING some type of theory etc etc etc. I respect Prince as a musician. In fact he's probably the ONLY musician who I can say I **RESPECT** and or have a RESPECT for his work. If you can play multiple instruments (over 20) mix, record, release multi platinum albums and sell out large venues (his shows always sell out in cali) I can respect that.

No respect for Roger? Although he never was multiplatinum, he always was a great producer, played every instrument under the sun, and had nearly as big of an influence on music as Prince..

I met Roger once...in Monterey California...sat in the car with him for about 10 minutes after his show...he played one of the H-Town instrumentals...something I'll NEVER FORGET...definitely one of the best! Not to mention a very cool person!

I never liked roger&zapp OR that talk box shit. I need to make a correction. I respect THREE musicians.

GEORGE CLINTON
JIMI HENDRIX
PRINCE

When I think of funk I think of clinton, bootsy, sly, p funk all stars, parliment funkadelic, fred wesley, horny horns etc etc etc. I don't get my funk from roger. Yeah roger had an influence on music especially th e"L.A." sound but he didn't influence me. Computer love, more bounce to the ounce? I couldnt get into it.
