was just poking around online cuz i was bored, and i noticed that in 1999/2000, around the time of the decline of our glorious empire, the 49ers lost tim mcdonald, merton hanks, and ken norton jr..however upon further research, i noticed that norton was 34 yrs old (couldve had 2-3 more in him), and that hanks and mcdonald were 31 and 30, respectively..

what i dont understand is why were the 3 let go? i mean, if it was cuz of the cheap ass yorks i understand that, but these guys each had more football left in them..altho i did notice that of the 3, hanks played a year with seattle in 1999, while the other 2 left the game entirely post-49ers..

i think if these 3 (or at least 2/3) had stayed, the team would've been better off for a few more years..yes i know hanks/mcdonald was replaced with lance schulters, but i woulda took those 2 any day..

umm did you happen to look at who replaced them and if we were under the salary cap at all?

people are usually let go for a reason, money or declining performances (i.e. safety last year for the 9ers forgot his name got him from the bears)

good point but i dont see where charlie garner comes in lol..

and yes, the releases of the 3 from the first post were probably salary cap issues cuz of all that dead money we had..its just surprising that they didn't wanna continue their careers, hanks n mcdonald each had another 5-6 years in them..

too bad..

just did a quick lookup of merton hanks. he played 1 season after the 49ers for seattle.

he played in 11 games, 19 tackles (13 solo), 2 interceptions (1 for td, 30 INT return yards total).

maybe the 9ers were right by letting him go.

The 49ers did Merton Hanks wrong... they released him like in June or July. They told him they was going to keep him and then ended up releasing him anyway. They could have did him a favor by releasing him earlier so he could have went to the mini camps and training camps with his new team... but the 49ers jacked him by releasing him later so they could save money.
