You know how some motherfuckas be on here saying shit like I only listen to this one type of hip hop. Ive heard people say and write posts on here saying I only listen to gangsta shit or I only listen to Hieroglyphics type mcs.
I listen to all types of Hip-Hop from all over the country. I think if you really fuck with Hip-Hop music you listen to all of it and then figure out what you like but still respect Hip-Hop as a whole.

Before this thread gets all retarded...let point out that Hip-hop is the art and rapping is only one element of it.

Rap=hip-hop and hip-hop=rap.

MC's are hip-hop artists. Hip-hop artists are rappers.

Just like, you call the art of Culinary, and the preformer is a chef.

The art is Hip-hop, and the performer is a rapper.

Definition of art:
the quality, production, expression, or realm, according to aesthetic principles, of what is beautiful, appealing, or of more than ordinary significance.

Hip-hop, as a whole, fails to meet the criteria.

That definition uses all subjective terms, so it's a pretty crappy definition. How about art=abstract expression. Hip-Hop is expression through music and (creative) use of language. Hip-Hop is art, though it may be saturated with bullshit nowadays.

No. It doesn't. Since the definition of art, at least the one you provided is by definition in and of itself subjective it makes for the classification of hip hop as an art form left to the individual to interpret.

im open to listen to anything, the majority of what i listen to is underground hip-hop, to me the shit on the radio sounds the same, and to me not a lot of skill or creativity is used. ive had people tell me my ear is biased, but the truth is i just hate how the industry works, to the big lables its not about putting out good quality music, its about making the next one hit wonder, just so they get paid and then the artists themselvs dont see a lot of that money. Then you have a lot of the fans whole dont listen to hip hop for the lyrics, but just for the beats. to me its all hip-hop, but the mainsteam has tunred a categorie of it into pop music.

Depends on who's definition that is. Art is many things and does not have to be beautiful--by the way, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

And I listen to all sorts of music, not just rap.

One would have a much easier time defending hip-hop as entertainment rather than art. In a few rare instances, hip-hop is art, but the majority of hip-hop is entertainment that utterly lacks artistic merit.

I feel the same... if you listen to hip hop you should be open to all sub-categories of it.
I disagree. To be open to all styles of rap music just because they are a part of Hiphop, and just for that very reason, is ridiculous. I like to listen to GOOD MUSIC period. The culture of Hiphop aside, rap music aside, genre's aside, your left with GOOD MUSIC. So if something sounds wack as fuck, I'm not going to listen to it! And I don't give a fuck if it's a part of Hiphop. If It's wack, I don't want to hear it, and I won't respect it either. I listen to GOOD MUSIC. In general. I listen to a lot of genres of music. Rap, R&B, Soul, Rock & Roll, Blues, Jazz, Alternative, Pop, Oldies, Doo Wop shit, everything. But out of all those genres I ONLY listen to what sounds GOOD to my ears. If the shit sounds bad and I'm not vibing off it, and I don't like the singer, or the melodies are wack or undeveloped, and it just sounds shitty, then I don't listen to it.

Nobody needs to conform a certain way and listen to all of Rap music and appreciate all styles of Rap, just because they are a part of Hiphop. Who gives a fat fuck? Listen to what SOUNDS GOOD to you, and support GOOD MUSIC.

Stop supporting BAD MUSIC! Get some taste! Respect yourself and your ears!

Good Music.

Later.
