Photoshop
1. Try using "mess" like splats, dots scraps anyshit scanned in on the computer, type the text normal and then add the pattern to a new layer overtop, use the magic wand on that layer and then u'll have a unique pattern selection, then select the layer with the text on it wit' the pattern still highlighted press delete - now all those bits of pattern will be cut out of your text which can give it a good weathered or old look - try it.
2. try overlapping texture and pictures over your text using different transparency settings like (normal, colour, hue, difference, mutliply) and then flatten image
3. Draw stuff by hand or photograph montages of letters and then scan them in and edit them in the computer. can look cool
4. Use a 3d text program or use vector tools, i like to use the polygon laso tool to draw 3d text with a then fill each side with a graident fill to make it look 3d - similar to graffitti and use the spray can for extra details and blending of colours
5. Try using the same text but with different filters and transparences on them over two different layers. example type "type" and blur it loads, type it again but this time leave it as it is and place it above the blurred word and use transparency is you want (the edges of the blur will show)
