June 18 (BCN) — A 17-year-old farm worker is under arrest and her newborn in the hospital after she gave birth in a portable toilet and left the baby girl lying in waste, Monterey County officials reported Thursday.
A field foreman, alerted to the child's screams by some of his workers, pulled the baby out of the toilet's reservoir and called 911 Thursday morning, according to a sheriff's office report.
The baby was taken to a local hospital and later to a Stanford hospital for specialized treatment, the report stated.
Investigators learned that one of the farm's workers had gone home sick, complaining of stomach pains, earlier that morning. When they found her at a Greenfield home, the teen reportedly admitted to leaving the baby in the toilet and was arrested.
The young woman's name has not been released because of her age. The sheriff's office reported that she refused medical treatment but was taken to Natividad Medical Center in Salinas and remained there in sheriff's custody Thursday. She could face an attempted murder charge, authorities said.
