Senator Theatre has hosted some of Chico's most wild and worthy shows, but for some reason, the staff doesn't seem to like having fun. The theater tried its hardest to take the excitement out of the crowd Thursday night, but was unable to tame the Tech N9ne fans.
The crowd was wild from the start and the mood was set.
Tech N9ne expected a big crowd that would bring loud and colorful mayhem in all sorts of good ways, he said.
That's just what he got.
Freshman Melissa Rickey, 18, a construction management major, expressed her annoyance with theater staff.
"The security guards kept telling me to back up, but I didn't listen," she said.
Hip-hop fans buzzed with enthusiasm as the opening rappers began to flow. Old and new fans came together to show Tech N9ne the love he deserved.
Tech N9ne showed he was ready to rage from the beginning. His face was painted black and white like diagonal zebra stripes, with a strange music symbol on his forehead. He was dressed in all red and ready to party. He danced around on the stage and encouraged fans to do the same.
He had a cold, but he didn't let it affect his performance. His voice was loud and smooth and his words were movements within themselves. He started strong and continued to deliver throughout the show. His lyrics rocked the room and moved the crowd from start to finish.
For junior Gabe Garcia, 20, the show was everything he hoped for and more, he said.
"This is my first Tech N9ne show and it was a great experience," the kinesiology major said. "Tech N9ne is so gangster - pulling girls onstage and singing songs to them."
Garcia plans on attending more Tech N9ne shows in the future and telling his friends to join him, he said.
Adrenaline and beats pumped throughout the theater, creating an environment filled with intensity. Tech N9ne played a variety of songs from his old repertoire and new arsenal. Each song sounded just as clear as it does on CD.
Some of the crowd's favorites included "Come Gangsta," "This Ring" and "I'm a Playa."
The stage was colorfully decorated with bright lights and glowing spiders. The lights flashed in rhythm with the music as heads bobbed to the beats. Tech N9ne began chanting, "Chico! Chico!" and the crowd stepped it up another notch.
People loved that he was saying "Chico," Rickey said.
As the night continued, the fans got crazier. Women were flashing their boobs and blowing Tech N9ne kisses.
Freshman Christina Martins, 18, a nursing major, experienced this firsthand.
"He flashed a light on me and asked me to show him my boobs," she said, "I laughed and shook my head 'no.'"
The party continued despite security guards and other Senator employees trying to stop it. Tech N9ne jumped into the crowd and began crowd surfing before a security guard forced him back onstage. Chico and Tech N9ne kept the excitement and mayhem alive and created a bond that could not be broken.
