Tech N9ne Blasts L.A. Times For Lip-Syncing Accusations
Posted on April 10, 2009, words by Ronnie Gamble

Indie rap juggernaut, Tech N9ne, recently lashed out at a Los Angeles Times writer, who claimed he lip-synced during a recent performance at the Southern California Paid Dues concert.

In the LA Times story, journalist Jeff Weiss wrote that "It appeared that N9ne was lip-syncing" during the recent headlining performance, and to no surprise, Tech N9ne was not feeling that.

According to AOL's BlackVoices, the 37-year-old rapper, who hails from Kansas City, responded at the Tuesday's (April 7) Rock The Bells press conference where he had some strong words for Mr. Weiss.

"All my life I have put all my energy into doing a wonderful show, a hardcore show -- I push until I lose my voice, and I say every word," explained Tech. "And for somebody to say, 'He appeared to be lip-syncing because it sounded so clear' -- To me, if I'm trying to use Paid Dues as a vehicle get on Rock the Bells, he would've ruined it, which would in turn would've ruined money I make for my children, which makes me really, really upset.

According to Tech, his main goal is to "impress" his fans, and along the way, move up the ladder. When a writer jeopardizes it, he takes it to heart.

"I'm out here to impress people, to get to the other plateau," the rapper continued. "This is the other plateau (Rock The Bells). Thank God I made it after somebody said something stupid about me that a lot of people knew was bullsh**, because something like that, I take it personally."

Tech continued to state his case, asking how anyone could put him into the same category as an act like Milli Vanilli when time after time, he's proven he can pack venues across the country.

"When it comes to Tech N9ne you say sh** that you know. And what he said was speculation: 'It appeared that he was lip-syncing.' No, you can't say Tech N9ne and Milli Vanilli in the same sentence," Tech N9ne said. "I can't sell out all these shows and people keep coming back if I was just cheating them with lip-syncing. So to Jeff Weiss, no I didn't appreciate it and I don't appreciate it. Tech N9ne works very hard. So hopefully he'll come to another show and he'll give me a f***ing apology because I deserve it."

Tech appeared and performed at the recent Rock The Bells press conference, where it was announced that he'd been added to the bill.

The indie rapper has made a name for himself over the years, thanks to his constant work on the road. In 2008, Tech was reported the third highest grossing rap tour act, behind Jay-Z and Kanye West.

What the guy was saying in the original article was that the levels were incorrect and the backing tracks overpowered any vocals coming out of the mic. This in turn, looks like lip-syncing. To bring up Milli-Vanilli is ridiculous since those guys knowingly went out and pretended to sing songs that other people recorded.

If you knowingly play your cd in the backround, which Tech DOES, and your mic isn't on (whether you know it or not) then you're tecnically lip-syncing.

Let's not bullshit about it.

It would be nice to have some video evidence to settle all the claims.

And I mean a high quality news coverage type video, not a shitty camera vid. But you do make a point, Zero.

I have vid of him and he's clearly doing it live... There was a backing track but you could hear Tech over it (for the most part), so I know he dosn't "lip-sync" on purpose, but if the acoustics in the venue or any other possibility cause your vocals to drown out, then all the audience is doing is listening to your cd. It's hard to tell from the stage how your vocals are playing out to the crowd.

I really don't think the article was too much of a big deal. I don't read the LA Times to learn about new rap acts.

It seems like some of the live songs have the lyrics and some dont. I think its that way, so if tech kutt or krizz miss a beat (which is rare) you still get the full effect. Sometimes I CAN hear the lyrics on occasion but most of the time no

proof?

I watched this clip like last week, and it's a fairly nice camera (shaky though) with good audio. It seems to pick up the vocals well, and as far as I can tell he is doing Too Much live here. It just doesn't sound like the recorded version.. Plus, I think I recall tech saying that only his older tracks still have the lyrics on it, and this definitely isn't old, so it shouldn't have them. Personally, I think this puts the matter to rest. Check it.

yeah in that paid dues clip he isn't lip synching. For somebody to make that type of accusation in a major publication like that could hurt your revenue so Tech was right to call him out on it.

it seemed pretty clear to me that the writer truly believed tech was lip-synching.

either way, it's something he shouldn't do or he's going to get a lot of flack from the hip-hop-authenticity police.

I agree.

The L.A. Times is huge and it's readers would probably believe that chump after reading it. Tech handled it well and called him out. I've been to about 7 Tech shows now and I've always been up front. Never once have I witnessed lip-syncing from Tech, Kutt or Krizz.
