LOS ANGELES -- A 43-year old former L.A. County probation camp teacher has been arrested on allegations that he encouraged fights between juveniles during class.
Stephen Wesley was arrested Tuesday morning at a home in Canoga Park in the San Fernando Valley, according to Sheriff's spokesman Steve Whitmore.
Whitmore says the arrest stems from several alleged incidents in 2008 in which students were allowed to fight while Wesley looked on.
One of the incidents was captured on a security camera at Camp Karl Holton in San Fernando.
According to reports, Wesley stood in a doorway as a lookout and referee while students cheered on fighting probationers.
He can allegedly be seen and heard refereeing several fights, cautioning participants not to draw blood or tell anyone about the boxing-style matches, according to a probation official who spoke to the newspaper.
Kerri Webb, spokeswoman with the county's office of education, says a student who had been injured in a fight alerted officials.
Wesley was an employee of the Los Angeles County Office of Education, not a Probation Department employee, according to Webb.
Wesley is scheduled to appear in Pasadena Municipal Court on Thursday. He is expected to be charged with six counts of child endangerment.
