I work on a morning radio show in Southern California. The station is CHR/Rhythmic which is radio code for Hip Hop and R & B.

Anyway, I received a complaint from a listener today saying that I needed to decide whether I was "white" or "black". I didn't really know what she meant so I asked her to elaborate.

Essentially, she said that she saw my pictures on the station web site and that since I'm not black, I shouldn't use any "ebonics" or slang terms that "black people use".

Personally, I don't believe I overuse any slang or come off as a poser, nor do I feel the need to over-exaggerate my hip hop language to be "down". I really don't censor or examine myself that closely when it comes to what words I use. I feel like at the end of the day, I am always myself.

Being a fan of hip hop and having friends and associates of varying ethnicities, I may have picked up some kinda twang over the years, but I don't feel that since I am not black (I'm middle eastern/white), I should be forced to adhere to some particular language stucture. That to me is stereotypical.

Comments are appreciated.

Yea, like I said, I don't feel like I'm being out of control with the slang shit....I'm not "forshizzling" all day long. If I'm talking about a party, my first instinct is not to say "It was really nice, a lot of cool people were there". I'd probably say "that shit was crackin!" and that's genuinely how I'd express how the party went.

For some people, they overdo that shit and it becomes ridiculous or some type of show they put on for people. In my heart of hearts, I know that's not my intent. The speech comes naturally.

In all honestly, the majority of my friends are either Black or of the hip hop fanbase and the language is just part of the culture we live and celebrate. If you hang out down south long enough, you might pick up a Southern twang. If you stay in England for awhile, chances are your voice will start adapting to the accent. I don't really see this as being any different.

The chick didn't seem like the sharpest knife in the drawer....

I have a gang of friends that sound nowhere near what their race would be in a stereotypical sense. One of my homegirls is in Marketing and talks to clients all day on the phone. Sometimes they'll come in and she'll meet them and their mouths will damn near hit the floor when they see that she is black. She gets a big kick out of it. There are times for relaxed speech and times for proper speech. She knows the difference and uses it to fuck with people's heads.

That's what radio is anyway....a mind fuck. I don't mind challenging people's stereotypes, but it's funny how folks really need to put people in boxes and when you stray, you are doing something wrong in their eyes.

Naw I'm in San Diego now....

The chick who called had a Mexican accent....but who knows what her race was, since you obviously can't tell by sound.

Either way, she said I need to decide whether to be white or black and now that I have the choice, I'm confused on which to choose. I'll let you guys know when I find make my final decision.

Be yourself. Those that know you, know who you are, how you talk, what your about. Obviously, she admires you enough to go on the website and find your picture, saw the godess that you are, and caught some type of jealousy bug. lol

My opinion is this. Everyone gets so caught up in who's doing what, how someone is speaking. Yes there are some folks who have lived in a certain environment most of their lives, and have picked up on whatever slang, etc is in that area. Yes there are some folks who grow up in one environment and see another and want to be a part of that so they latch onto whatever they can, and most of the time it ends up sounding or looking unnatural. The whole "acting black/white/hispanic" thing is comedy.

thats all
