Okay, so I know & heard that sales pitch over & over to the point where it's gotten old. It's become the desperate man's line to try & close a deal. Same as the word "Hustler." Over played etc.

I keep getting messages in my social media pages from random ass people claiming they can help me sell / push my records. Or offer me a featured spot on their album, but the last thing they mention is that there is a fee.

The last one I looked into was a promotion company and it all sounds good, but when I looked deeper into it they had maybe 40 more followers / views etc. Than I did.

I'm really getting sick & tired of people thinking that some of us still believe that a certain amount of money is going to automatically break us into the game.

Your thoughts?

As long as people are willing to pay to play then the hustle of getting up and coming musicians to pay a fee to be featured on a compilation, get spins on an internet radio show, or paying for a magazine article, is going to be around. for the ones that don't pay like me and you, there are many others that do.
also, paying to do shows. this concept has ruined many rap shows because they don't care if you have talent or not as long as you have the money they will have you open up for someone.

You have to invest in yourself to win. Unless you rob people that only takes a gun to make money.

Allow me to paint you the scenario of how it goes down most of the time. After messages & messages you finally swap numbers to talk in volume. I like to listen with an open mind so I hear what they have to say on how they can help me (wink, wink.)

The end result is, give me an ex amount of dollars to get this paper work started & we'll make this happen. The fine print in conversation is, there is no guarantee of anything. So, that would be like me calling you & telling you if you give me an ex amount of money, I'll give it a shot to help you out, but there is a strong chance that you'll still be where your at next year. Is that investing?

You check their links etc. And they don't have as much followers / views etc. than you. So how can it be that they'll take you & shoot you to the masses?

Investing in oneself does not mean you buy into every Tom, Dick & Hank trying to sell you a dream amigo.

This is basically what distributors are doing, just at a lower and jankier level. I worked for a small label here in OKC with an artist Dre Murray. He's a Christian hip hop artist but someone gave his CD to someone at universal. This was a quality project and had some radio friendly tracks on there, not just the normal Christian stuff that the average person would turn off in 20 seconds or less. But the response was... We love it!! I think this album is great, and one of these tracks in particular is so important to today's society that I think it should be on every radio station. BUT... We're only willing to share the risk. IF you come up with $100,000., we can distribute you and work on getting you on the radio.

Huh? A giant company like Universal loves it that much but you still need $100,000. to break into the game? It does take money to make money. But any of these small time cats you're coming across are likely a waste of your time and money, as you're well aware.

I know exactly what you mean, Bro. A few years back I did some research. I kept seeing a lot of southerners albums in stores and knowing they were underground, I kept asking myself, "How the hell did these guys get distribution deal through Universal?"

I contacted Universal & low & behold they would distribute my whole catalog for yes, the low, low price of $100,000 LOL!

I then ran across some people putting out compilations & charging $1000.00 slots claiming it would be distributed by Universal. It became an independent label's fundraiser to do that & get distribution.

I've always felt that distribution is meaningless without a hit record. Especially in today's music world. Major physical distribution / consignment is dead in water today when everything has gone digital.

This is an old game in the rock music buisness. I had multiple dudes I grew up with that got "signed" to these labels. Basically you pay them an amount. Usually $3000-10,000 and they put out your cd and get it in some stores and you can say you are signed. It's a hustle. Ask these sharks for a list of artists that they worked with that are now popular. There aren't any.
