What are the views of this notion on this board? It is definitely a slippery slope.

On one hand, one could say all of our modern terrorism woes have specifically to do with our state funding and support of Israel as well as our support of their occupation of Palestine.

On the other hand, Israel is basically our only ally in the region, and without our support could possibly be invaded and razed to the ground by hostile neighboring states. If a large-scale war breaks out in the Middle East, they could likely be our only ally in a conventional sense.

I've been back and forth on this issue and heard great arguments from both sides. It seems to be a lose-lose situation. Where do you folks stand? In addition what would you propose as a course of action?

You can't win for losing in Israel. If you cut funding even the slightest bit, the zionist (VERY INFLUENTIAL) lobbyists will pitch a bitch and cry anti-semitism. Our Israeli policy has alienated every single nation in the region and even if we cease being Israel's personal ATM, they'll still mistrust us. It'll take YEARS to repair that rift.

That being said, the only way out of this without our tail between our legs is to do EXACTLY what the Bush administration has planned even BEFORE 911. March into the arab nations one by one, spread our "freedom" (much like a virus), replace the governments with pro-USA, pro-Israel has a right to exist puppets. The question is, can it be done without bankrupting us?

OR...we can leave with our tail between our legs and watch Israel perish (which is what I would like to see happen).

Our other ally in the region, Saudi Arabia, isn't nearly as tyranical or oppressive as Israel is towards Palestine. Even their infuriating settlements do nothing but disrupt the lives of the Palestinian people. I saw something on television the other day that said everytime anyone from the settlements wants to drive out to Israel, the army closes the roads so they can drive down the highway freely, leaving Palestinians on their way to work, or the market in L.A.-like traffic, sitting there until the settlers have passed and the military decides to re-open the road. That in itself is a psychological slap in their face. Of course they are going to hate the oppressive government and their backers. Al Jazeera shows this across the Muslim lands and feeds the notion that we and the zionists are in bed against them. It definately is a lose-lose situation and it will come to a head one day and drag us down with it.

Dunno how Pat Tillman found his way into this thread, but what the fuck.
Lets keep the ball rolling haha....

All I gotta say about this cat is that like most NFL players, the roids were fuckin with his head.
Them Army commercials played with his roid induced rage and prompted him to "be all he can be".
Unfortunately for him, the Army never tells you that being all you can be leads you to being a dead dude....

Now back on the subject....
Isreal was just the first step to bringing Capitalism to the Arab/Muslim world.

Except that this scenario is highly unrealistic. In fact, it wouldn't be a gross exaggeration at all to say that the military power of the hostile neighboring states combined is dwarfed by that of Israel. The Israeli army (IDF) is arguably the most effective and undoubtedly among the most "high-tech" armies in the world.

USA's seemingly unconditional political support has, to a large extent, enabled Israel to continue its brutal occupation of the Palestinian territories while practically disregarding the international community.

There needs to be an independent Israeli state and an independent Palestinian state. All finances need to be distributed equally amongst both countries. All resources should be equally shared, as part of a planned economy, controlled and run by the working class. A dramatic rise in living standards, including a massive house-building programme, would need to be implemented. Just my pipe dream.

2-0, I finally agree w/ you on an Israli issue. Unfortuneately after many concessions Afrafat denies all equitable distribution of land. The palastinians will never be satisfied until they control the entire region. Thus far, neither side is willing to stop exchanging a blow for a blow, which is why the violence breeds more violence.

Peace in the middle East
