TOP TEN REASONS TO PICK THE STEELERS
TO WIN SUPER BOWL XL.
January 31, 2006

1) Ben Roethlisberger has gone from a rookie who managed the game well for a good team into a budding superstar. He has started 30 regular or postseason NFL games and won 26 of them. Two of the losses were to Bill Belichick's New England Patriots. The other two occurred in his first games back from injury. This guy doesn't lose.

2) The Steelers are on a roll, and it's only partly due to the quarterback. They establish the passing game, and then can control the clock. I haven't seen a team play a "Four-Corners" offense like the Steelers since Phil Ford perfected it for Dean Smith in college basketball 30 years ago. Pittsburgh has managed 33:19 of time of possession in their three playoff games.

3) One of the reasons for the success of the ground game is Pittsburgh guard Alan Faneca. He might be the best guard in the NFL. His battle against Seattle right defensive tackle Rocky Bernard is going to be won by Faneca. Parker and Bettis run left, and Marvel Smith and Faneca are up to the task.

4) The Steelers traditionally have the best blocking wide receivers in the game. And rookie tight end Heath Miller (besides catching 6 touchdowns and another one in the postseason) might be the best blocking tight end in the NFL.

5) The Seattle Seahawks were only ordinary away from Seattle, posting five wins--none of them against the league's elite. Take this team out of Seattle (Detroit figures to be a heavy-Pittsburgh crowd) and they're not a great team.

6) Earlier this year, the Seahawks defeated the Dallas Cowboys in Seattle by a score of 13-10, only when Dallas quarterback Drew Bledsoe threw a late interception. My point is this: Seattle--at home--was held to 13 points. Shawn Alexander was 21-61 yards, and no touchdowns. And Matt Hasselbeck had only a 58 passer rating. Why I bring this up: only the Cowboys have a strong safety (Roy Williams) anywhere near as good as Pittsburgh's Troy Polamalu.

7) Is there anything more useless than a great running back (Alexander) when a team falls behind by double-digits?

8) Pittsburgh has faced a tougher road--both regular season and postseason--and this will benefit them in the big game.

9) Kimo von Oelhoffen and Joey Porter should be able to negate in part the great Walter Jones.

10) Don't ask me why, but I feel a long return coming by Steelers punt returner Antwaan Randle El.
