Nick Diaz vs. K.J. Noons title fight official, serves as Oct. 9 Strikeforce headliner

As expected Strikeforce welterweight champion Nick Diaz (22-7 MMA, 3-0 SF) and K.J. Noons (10-2 MMA, 2-0 SF) will fight at an Oct. 9 event at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, Calif.

Strikeforce spokesperson Mike Afromowitz today confirmed with the championship bout with MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) and said it'll serve as the night's main event.

The rematch, which is three years in the making, airs as part of the night's Showtime broadcast.

Tickets for the event, which features a co-headliner between Strikeforce women's welterweight champion Sarah Kaufman and challenger Marloes Coenen, are now on sale for Strikeforce Insiders.

Earlier today, MMAjunkie.com reported that Diaz vs. Noons was in the process of being finalized. Noons got the slot after middleweight Jason "Mayhem" Miller, welterweight Joe Riggs and a possibly soon-to-depart Jay Hieron were ruled out as potential opponents.

Noons set up the title fight after scoring a second-round TKO of Jorge Gurgel this past weekend at "Strikeforce: Houston." The victory was Noons' sixth straight going back to 2007, the year he upset Nick Diaz at "EliteXC: Renegade." Noons, who's also a professional boxer, battered Diaz and opened numerous facial cuts, which promoted a ringside physician to halt the bout after the first round.

EliteXC officials never were able to book the rematch, partially due to a contract dispute between Noons and the now-defunct promotion. But when Noons signed with Strikefore earlier this year, the wheels were set in motion.

However, that didn't keep Diaz from confronting Noons at a June 2008 event in Hawaii, when both fighters registered winners against separate fighters.

"Nick has no class, he's a bum, a piece of [expletive], and he and his team disrespected my family and I with their gestures and trash talk and tried to upstage my fight,'' stated Noons, whose camp nearly came to blows with Diaz's.

Since joining Strikeforce, Noons defeated Conor Heun (split decision) and Gurgel at lightweight and now moves up to welterweight to take on Diaz.

Diaz brings a seven-fight win streak of his own into the fight. After Strikeforce victories over Frank Shamrock (179 pounds), Scott Smith (180 pounds) and Marius Zaromskis (for the welterweight title), he went to Japan and submitted Hayato Sakurai at May's DREAM.14 event. Diaz, whose suspension due to his role in April's CBS-televised Strikeforce brawl will end by Oct. 9, now looks for his 12th win in 13 fights.

Stupid fight. two lightweight fights = a welterweight fight for the title? Come on now. Don't be scared homie.
Nick's fought his entire career at WW or above. I don't buy the EliteXC lightweight shit considering the limit was 160lbs and Diaz only fought at that weight a few times.

.. I think KJ stings that ass again. Nick's boxing looks good against people that can't box and his takedowns aren't all that great. If he gets Noons down it's a different game but Noons stings him on the feet again IMO.

I'm pretty sure he was talking about Noons.............Nick is already the WW champ, Noons has come to StrikeForce and fought 2 times at LW and is now getting a shot at the WW belt which makes zero sense.

Nick Diaz lost cause of his constant fight schedule and the scar tissue that could never heal properly. A few shots landed but nothing to take him out completely. Its gonna be a good fight, one that I feel Nick could avenge. I aint taking nothing away from Noons. His boxing is crisp and has decent take down defense. But I see Nick subbing him in the later rounds....

i dont know how people can think this fight would go any different, i mean maybe nick's striking is a little bit better now but its still at a very amateur level compared to noons... and did u see what happened every time nick tried to take him to the ground? please i cant wait to see noons re-arrange nicks face again in his own backyard...

well the first fight was at 160. It seems like Nick has a lot more power after coming down from the fights at 180 with Smith and Shammy. And you never know how KJ will look moving up in weight for the first time.

i think nick wins it in the championship rounds this time. as for my rebuttal to the reaction to my womens fights comment--- dont care, 90% of the co-main-event men's fights they coulda put on this woulda been better IMO. they coulda threw babalu vs hendo on this shit & made it even more highly anticipated. women need their own league imo. its like if wnba games replaced 1/5th of nba games during the season..

Well I enjoy womens MMA not as much as the men, but that is because the womens division is still so new.

I see what your saying though except that I do not like the WNBA in no fashion at all, so that would be different in my case.

i fuckin' love womens mma those chicks throw down! cant say i've ever seen a boring women's mma fight ever... and i also wished hendo was on this card but him being one of the biggest names that strikeforce has you know they rather have him headline his own shit and put together another card around him...
