FEDOR AND STRIKEFORCE HEADED TO PAY-PER-VIEW
Once Fedor “the Last Emperor” Emelianenko and Fabricio Werdum square off on June 26 in San Jose, California, one fight will remain on the Russian heavyweight’s contract. With Emelianenko potentially earning a spot in Parliament combined with rumors of an impending retirement, the lone bout may serve as the swan song for “the Last Emperor.”
Evgeni Kogan, Director of Operations for M-1 Gobal, believes that Emelianenko’s final contracted fight for Strikeforce will likely be on pay-per-view. If true, that event would mark the organization’s first foray into the market. Thus far, Strikeforce has relied on partnerships with Showtime and CBS for broadcasting opportunities.
“Following this fight now we have one more fight on the cards. That’s the future for now, there’s one more fight following the June 26 fight and that fight is more likely than not on pay-per-view.”
Should Emelianenko defeat Werdum in June, the stars would align for a potential match up with current Strikeforce heavyweight champion, Alistair Overeem. A meeting between the two would almost certainly headline the Strikeforce pay-per-view event.
Before MMA fans can flood the internet with fight predictions, Kogan clarified that negotiations between M-1 Global, Strikeforce and Golden Glory have yet to take place. In all likelihood, the bout would not happen until sometime next year, if at all.
“It depends on what happens during this fight. It depends on health issues, and whatever else following this fight. It depends also by other factors, so I don’t want to tell you something and not have it happen. It’s possible, it’s not unlikely, but I wouldn’t say I’d guarantee that it happens in 2010.”
Strikeforce has not released a statement regarding M-1 Global’s claims.
