cuz a lot of artist (nas as an example) used to say that they popped this gun and that gun. When it was exposed that he wasn't a thug, he started saying that he was just a storyteller. Telling stories of what he has seen and heard.

That's bullshit - if an artist ain't been through it don't talk about it. Lyrics is just like talking. If you're writing lyrics talking shit, expect to be dealt with on a real physical level.

Stick to rappin bout dancin in clubs like ol bitch ass DJ Quik.

To me, it all depends on what fits the profile.

If an artist has skills and doesn't say he's a thug or fronts like one, then I would listen to him.

An artist with street cred (usually a lot of it) and no skills often end up as a mainstream artists since it's their gimmick and not their lyrical skill that sells (50 Cent).

Then again we have artists who do have skill, but are complete hand puppets for the mainstream (Ja Rule, I admit he does have skill and artist range).

Most artists though do have both street cred and skills, and there are artists who want to immitate that kind of shit.

yeah you gotta keep it real.....i dont respect cats from rich ass cities talking bout poppin glocks and pullin jacks and livin in the ghetto cause that aint what they really about (ahem...kobesoz)

i know cats personally that are from somewhat rich suburban areas that dont talk about fake shit they know nothin about....i may not like some their music, but i respect the fact they keep it real bout they surroundings....and make music....not gangsta rap.

Both our albums is real talk, we appeal to the broke and hungry....aint no bling bling shit on a single song.....just real game from the heart....

"We makin moves.....killin two birds with every stone
While I spit the shit I go through hopin its hittin home
Feelin highly inebriated...police be suffocating
Im money hungry , sucka shit is not tolerated "

Dirty Money on "Real Niggas pt. II"

basically i gotta be able to tell a cat know what he talkin about....i wanna hear the hunger in his lyrics, the emotion in his voice....etc....

The real can tell the fake a mile away

Yeah it does look like I said that! 50 used to be mad lyrical back in the days of "The Power of the Dollar" and I won't deny that he got talent.....it's just that he's not using enough of his usual talent and letting that bullethole in his grill make his shit sell!

Maybe I should rephrase, "artists with street cred complimeted with either skill or no skill often become mainstream artists"

Ja Rule doesn't have any street cred.
therefore this theory is debunked.

& 50 can rap... i think he's got more talent than anybody from the bay, just cause of the funny as shit he says. but if you want to hear tight 50 shit, then pick up the mixtapes, not the album...
