Spider-Man: Edge of Time has been announced by developer Beenox as their next game following the highly successful Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions released last holiday, although its not quite Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions 2.

Edge of Time is in development for unspecified platforms with a target release of this Fall.

Spider-Man: Edge of Time is a focused, action-packed adventure set in two connected and evolving timelines, from the contemporary times of the Amazing Spider-Man to the corrupted future world of Spider-Man 2099, against the backdrop of a rich, tightly crafted narrative by acclaimed Marvel veteran Peter David (co-creator of the comic book series Spider-Man 2099).

The game features all-new “cause-and-effect” gameplay, where players will see how the immediate and sometimes unexpected effects of their actions as one Spider-Man changes the timeline of the other Spider-Man. Original? Not in the least, but hopefully it will be done well regardless.

“The first Spider-Man entry by Beenox, Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions was touted as one of the best Spider-Man games to date from both critics and fans,” said Vicharin Vadakan, Director, Global Brand Management. “Beenox is once again taking a fresh and different approach to bring a high-octane adventure and unexpected story to life in Spider-Man: Edge of Time.”

“At Beenox, we are constantly listening to the fans and looking for new and creative ways to innovate the gameplay experience for them,” said Dee Brown, Studio Head, Beenox. “We want to create a totally distinct experience in Spider-Man: Edge of Time by working with Peter David on the story and creating this urgent, high-stakes experience where time is working against you and the fate of Spider-Man hangs in the balance.”

We’ll see more official details on the game at WonderCon 2011. Shattered Dimensions was released on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Wii, PC, and DS so we can probably expect to see a release on the same platforms this time around.

Earlier this week, Spider-Man: Edge of Time was announced and the world found out Peter Parker was going to die. To save him, Amazing Spider-Man and Spider-Man 2099 would have to work together across time. And that was it. No explanation of what that meant. It sucked.

But now, after the WonderCon Spider-Man: Edge of Time panel, a few more story details are known. It seems an "evil scientist" in the 2099 world goes back in time to the Amazing Spider-Man time frame and kills Spidey. Spider-Man 2099 sees this, but it doesn't stop the world from going down a skewed path -- a trailer showed the Statue of Liberty in 2099 morphing into a sword-bearing woman as the timeline reacted to the death.

Knowing how things were supposed to be, Spider-Man 2099 reaches back to Amazing Spider-Man (pre-death), and the duo starts to work together -- although they don't get along at first. How do these heroes separated by time communicate? Picture-in-picture. When we're playing as one Spidey, we'll see the other in the bottom ring corner of the screen.

This partnership will have a bunch of time-bending effects. When we're playing as 2099 and Amazing knocks down a wall in his time, that wall's going to disappear in our time. One screenshot the panel showed was Amazing destroying a giant robot that was a prototype of the one 2099 was fighting in the future. When Amazing beats the prototype, the robot 2099 is fighting disappears.

Although the game will have you jumping between the two Spider-Mans, it's a single-player endeavor. Spider-Man: Edge of Time also isn't a sequel to last year's Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions. This is an original standalone story -- but it does borrow some of Shattered Dimensions' cast. Josh Keaton played Ultimate Spider-Man in Shattered Dimensions. Christopher Daniel Barnes was Noir Spider-Man in the last game and is 2099 in this one.

Oh, and if you're a super-Marvel fan and are pissed that this storyline mixes universes -- technically, Amazing and 2099 aren't in the same reality -- the creators say that they're on it and will explain it in the game.

oh ya. duh...it said that in the first page..

but still, think about it like this..if there was no spider-man, who would 2099 model himself after? if my memory is correct, didnt 2099 study the original spider-man? this is some time space continum shit breh..

different universes yes, but just how would 2099 exist if it were for his study of the amazing?
