On the list of new role-playing games Obsidian Entertainment might just happen to announce today, one based on the long-enduring Comedy Central animated series South Park probably ranked somewhere near the bottom of the list of likely choices, sandwiched somewhere between a tactical, turn-based RPG based on The Rockford Files, and that Andy Griffith Show game Gary Whitta is always on about.

And yet, here we are with a Game Informer cover story exclusively announcing a new South Park RPG, courtesy of Obsidian and publisher THQ. While the core details on the game are locked away within the pages of next month's GI issue, the online story does make a big point to separate this latest game from the cheap, crappy cash-in games Acclaim produced last decade. Instead, this latest foray into South Park video gaming is set to be a "full-scale RPG" for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, with Trey Parker and Matt Stone fully on board for writing and voice-acting duties.

In the game, you'll be playing as a new kid in South Park, who will find themselves tasked with befriending the town's most famous children and defending the population from a variety of threats. What, exactly, those threats might be are as yet unknown, but the complete cover image does include the likes of Satan, a giant dragon, and the feared ManBearPig hovering in the background. Also, I can't imagine Cartman having wizardly abilities is going to bode well for anyone.

South Park: The Game is currently scheduled for a nebulous "2012" release. Expect more details when the latest issue of Game Informer hits, and everyone copies and pastes the text onto the Internet.

Report: Obsidian hit with layoffs; South Park team affected, future next-gen title canceled

by Alexander Sliwinski on Mar 14th 2012 11:00AM

Obsidian Entertainment reportedly experienced a round of layoffs this week, with the extent of the damage not entirely clear. The company's forums lay out an idea of the body count, with messages on Twitter filling in more details.

"Another project canceled, this time for a future next-gen project and the layoffs impacted that team, plus the existing South Park team," a tipster wrote Joystiq. "Approximately 20-30 people from all disciplines, including one person who started yesterday, as well as one who started last week."

It was around this time last year that Obsidian also let staff go. We've contacted the company for an official statement.

Update: "We are always happy to talk about our announced projects, gaming and the industry as a whole. However, it is our policy to not comment on stories regarding our staff," Obsidian CEO Feargus Urquhart informed us this afternoon.

Report: Obsidian hit with layoffs, next-gen project canceled, South Park affected

By Griffin McElroy on March 14, 2012 11:49 am

According to several Tweets and hastily updated LinkedIn profiles of Obsidian employees, the developer has been hit with a round of layoffs, the size and scope of which is still unclear. The damage is being tracked in a forum post on the company's site, which dug up the departures of lead programmer Frank Kowalkowski, UI artist Jason Sereno and level designer Casey Kwock, to name just a few.

A tipster gave Joystiq more purported details on the firings, saying, "Another project canceled, this time for a future next-gen project and the layoffs impacted that team, plus the existing South Park team." The next-gen project appears to have been codenamed Project North Carolina, while several LinkedIn profiles show that the fired employees did indeed work on the South Park RPG. The tipster added that "approximately 20-30 people" were let go, including someone who started at the company just yesterday.

We've reached out to a few of the affected employees for our own first-hand corroboration, and also to THQ, as the company's recent financial troubles might have had an impact on the funding for Obsidian's South Park RPG.

Update: Vox Games' sources confirm that the layoffs were triggered in party by the cancellation of Project North Carolina.
