its best buy thats gonna discontinue the 80gig, not ps3

An employee of Best Buy who would obviously like to remain anonymous had sent a scan this morning displaying the fact that Best Buy will be discontinuing the 80GB model of the PlayStation 3. The scanned copy of what appears to be a staff letter reads, "The 80GB version of the PS3 is going closeout and won't be replaced at this time," it further goes on to say, "It will come off the planogram on Jan. 28. The 60GB version should already be gone from stores. Only the 40GB version of PS3 will be sold in Best Buy stores at this time."

With the recent rumors of a 40GB price drop down to $299 and the desire to further push the PlayStation 3 games library, some would speculate that this move only makes complete sense. It would also give some valid claim to the recent rumors around the subject as well.

We could very well see Sony releasing the 2 SKU’s for the White/Black models of the 40GB PS3 at a price point of $299. This would inevitably force Microsoft to also cut their prices as well. With the latest announcement that the production cost of the PS3 has been effectively cut in half, it all certainly adds up to the probability that this could all in fact be true. We’ll have to keep our eyes open for more updates on the matter.

best buy is just discontinuing it. 40 gig and 80 gig is the only thing sony sells now. they are only discontinuing it so people can buy the ps3 then the 80 gig will hit the best buy shelves again. even if its true, which im sure its not, sony would lose soooooo much money discontinuing the 80 gig.

Sony is discontinuing the 80gb because of poor sales for that model.

The 60gb ps3 could play all the ps2 games becuase it had the ps2 chip in the system.

the 80gb ps3 plays ps2 games thru emulator software in the ps3. so about 98% of them work and no one knows how all the games run thru emulation. the 80gb also has memory card readers and 4 usb ports on the front of the system.

the 40gb ps3 doesnt play ps2 games at all (even though the emulator software isnt no where near 40gb). it has no memory card readers and only has 2 usb ports in the front.

Playing ps2 games isnt that big of a deal until you want to play a ps2 game.

I'm not buying a ps3 until rumble controllers are sold with the system and hopefully by then the price goes down or i hear them announce something that is better.
