Sony Corp. this week credited Nintendo Co.’s Wii in the motion gaming space when introducing the company’s new Playstation Move motion controller for the Playstation 3 this week.
Peter Dille, Senior Vice President, Marketing & PlayStation Network told press this week at the Games Developers Conference in San Francisco, CA that Nintendo has done a great job introducing motion gaming to the masses.
However, Dille thinks the Playstation Move can provide a technological edge that the competition can’t.
“We’d like to think this is the next-generation of motion gaming,” he said.
Dille emphasized the benefits of the Playstation Move, including a combination of the Playstation Eye camera and the accuracy of the Move controller, which includes two motion sensors, three axes gyroscope, three axes accelerometer to detect controller angle and movement.
Demos included Boxing, Archery, Table Tennis, and shooting titles.
The PS Move will be sold in an add-on configuration to include the Playstation Eye, Move controller, and game at under $100. Other stand-alone and PS3 hardware bundle configurations will be set at to-be-determined prices.
Nintendo in 2009 released the Wii MotionPlus, an accessory to enhance the motion-sensitive controls of the Wii Remote.
The peripheral was included in Wii Sports Resort, which has sold more than 14 million units worldwide.
Lifetime U.S. sales for Wii have topped 27.2 million units. More than 50 million units have been sold worldwide.
The PS3 has sold 33.5 million units to date worldwide.
