We all know Tech is bound to break into the "industry" or "mainstream" sooner than later. Knowing this, I was just thinking on some shit...
50 Cent was a breath of fresh air in the mainstream music scene for many, many people, a cat that wasn't spitting the typical "mainstream" music. I have noticed that lately as 50 gets bigger and bigger he is taking alot of cheap shots. Everybody wants to try and clown 50, says he is selling out, all kinds of shit. I think this is bullshit...the dude hasn't changed his music. 50 is the classic example of an underground rapper breaking into the mainstream. He made it big, and of course, he is being labeled as a sellout now.
While being quite different there are many similarities between Tech and 50...I mean, shit, both have been rapping for a good minute now, have had faulty deals, and have enjoyed realtive success in the "independent" or "underground" scenes. Assuming Tech signs a deal within the next year or so and he get's the major label budget you need these days to break out, do you guys think will be labeled a sellout as soon as the "newness" of Tech N9ne wears off.
It happened to 50...will it happen to Tech?
People like to bash Nelly and cats like him cause they make "hip-pop" music, but is it really that? It seems to me like we as the listeners don't like people that are hugely successful. I think its like, you want to be the cat on top of the next big thing, not just another fan in the midst of millions. Are we so selfish that we only want the shit that nobody else has or knows about?
So now I ask...when Tech makes his mark on the mainstream and has millions of fans will he still be as cool to you cats? When he has a bunch of elementary and middle school kids, who saw him on MTV, rocking Tech N9ne T-Shirts, will you still be a fan ( in the midst of all the "new" fans) or will you be moving on to the next hot act coming out of the "underground" that nobody knows about?
As a final word...I can only hope for the best for Tech and the other artists at Strange Music and hope they do make it to the "mainstream"....do you?
