...the relationships between the older and younger generations. Yesterday I had to stop an encounter between six kids and one adult (he was going to bap them with a shovel), but in the end the KIDS showed more respect and wisdom than the adult.

Whats your take on kids these days and how they treat their elders? Whats your take on how older folks view kids (especially pre teens and teens?)

Talk about it.

Good Topic.

I think a lot of young kids are raised old school style still, so there are some people who continue to show respect to their elders. However, I would say there are more kids who are let completely loose by their parents and do whatever the fuck they want, and these kids are ones with no respect.

Old folks on the other hand, the way they view young people is never gonna change; partly due to jealousy. Old people always wish they could get some years back, and always say that they had it harder (a lot of the times true), but I think that people will be this way no matter what.

DAMN REAL BAD!!!!! I remember getting my ass whooped. We live in a world were the children lack discipline and the attention the parents should give them. It's a shame how this generation has become. As me and you know it, it's just another thing that must come to pass. A generation like those of Noah's Time. It's embarrassing because as a young man part of this generation, it feels weird to be associated with the general perception of today's "YOUNG".

I have 8 essays due by tomorrow LOL, I've been lagging, but you probably know what to expect from me, I'll just keep babbling on about what the bible says, "The generation that shall not pass." Anyways, I'm interested in hearing what others would say. I'm very ashamed. When I have kids, I'm whooping them, but I'm still going to spare the rod.

Children are being raised by younger, more disrespectful child parents.

They have no respect for nearly anyone, including the old. We should be ashamed of the way we treat our elderly in US society. And the fact that the kids were acting more mature than the adult leads me to believe the adult was either off in the head or extremely immature/ridiculous.

The reason they acted more mature is because of the way I came at them, and it didn't take me long to diffuse the situation. I asked them if they had parents and how would they feel if someone were disrespecting their parents, and they each told me they wouldn't like it. However, when I spoke with the older guy (whos like in his late 50s) he said "but there daddy needs to whoop their ass", and I was like "that may be true Sir, but you don't need to do it, and if you did do it you don't need a shovel. You don't need to go to jail sir."

So when I was telling him this the kids started to walk off, but I called them back. I asked each one their name, shook their hand and told them mine. I asked where they lived, where they went to school, and what they were doing in this neighborhood cause I had never saw them before. They all gave me the info, and afterwards I started to tell them about JESUS LOL! JUST KIDDING! I actually started to tell them that they are young black males and that if they continue they would be swallowed up in the system. I told them if the police saw them they would pull them over, etc etc etc, but when they finally left (I talked to them for about 10 minutes) they left feeling "respected" and that was there main complaint that the old guy had disrespected them.

That's the best way to bridge those gaps... Mutual respect...

ever since they started suin' their parents... shit's been goin' downhill... there used to be a bigger cultural gap. when i say that i mean.. there were less first generation kids 20 years go.. kids who are born here now come from all different places.. and they all act white 'cause and think they can get away with the shit... and kids are fat now.. does that have any relation to the the respect issue.

Yea, kids do not respect their elders at all, I almost had to slap the shit out of my lil brother for stealing some of my weed last week, lol.. Naw, seriously, drugs have a lot to do with it and cultural influence as part of a defiant and dynamic youth culture.. Kids now a days are getting a lot more bold and growing up a lot faster, as a consequence they feel that they know it all, sometimes as if they know more than adults. I'm only 22, so it wasn't that long ago when I was 17, and yes, I thought that I knew everything, what need was there to listen to or respect my elders if they couldn't possibly understand my plight or what I know?

Kids forget that older folx have been there before, literally, it seems so cliche but is so true at the same time. Kids have a lot to learn from adults, but broken house holds and drugs have poisoned a lot of these kid's minds and led them into obscurity, lost and confused, their principles are for the most part arbitrary and guided by the streets and life experiences. We simply need more village Griots like heresy who can actually step in and play their part, we need at least one Griot for every neighborhood, and actually everyone should pitch in to help take care of the village. It would be a lot easier to deal with these youth if people were more patient with them..

This whole 'material possessions equals self worth' has got kids all messed up.

I coach JV baseball at one of the HS's around here, and it just seems like there is a general lack of drive, passion, commitment, and discipline... ect. The other coach and I have tried running them, yellin' at them, giving them heart to hearts, lettin' them montitor them selves, and there's nothin' there, its like a lack of respect for self and others, it's just empty....

Don't get me wrong there are kids that do work hard, but overall the other inner city/urban schools are in the same boat as us, and don't to have the same intense motivation or ambition that our sub-urban counterparts embody

On the whole, the administrative b.s, the curriculum, and inefficient/inept. heads and parents and guardians are doin' a major disservice to the kids as well.

I don't know though, if what they say about the youth being our future, we're screwed...

It's a direct correlation between how they are raised to dictate how they respect their elders.

I find it's a mix of both. Some kids are really fucking stupid and some of them aren't. I tend to hold doors open for people when they're close behind me and 9/10 times people my age, will NOT say shit...people that are older, 8/10 WILL say thank you, or that was so nice, or something like that. They just appreciate things more cause they know it's not a given that someone will do that.

I've dealt with shit head adults that lie to my face (professors at my college) and it's pretty pathetic. It's really based on the individual rather than the age....but it also depends on when you encounter the person, they could be in a good or bad mood and that will effect how they act.

I always used to hear old people talk about "kids these days" and things like that and now that i am getting older i am seeing why this is said. Kids have less respect then ever for older people, even people my age which are still quite young. This could be a personal respect but i feel as though it can apply to anyone who has much more life experiance then somone who is much younger. I would respect people with more knowledge and who were older then me because of their experiance. I would never talk shit or act totally disrespectful to somone who was twice my age that could beat my ass if i acted like a fool. But nowa days these little shits run their mouths off like nobodies business and have no repsect at all for older generations. Its something that gets worse and worse and generations go by, and its something that evolves so quickly that even in my lifetime i have seen it happen. Whats the solution to this kind of thing? whats to blame? I believe if you want to place a partial blame it could be the type of society we are shaped into today, the media, the movies, the lifestyle of kids these days. The average age of kids having sex these days is 13 years old, pretty fucked up. Drug use is happening even earlier and kids these days while i try not to generalize are not concerned with past events and live only by things they have experianced. Either way its really obvious to see that kids these days lack even more respect then ever towards elders.
