DONT SLEEP ON THIS CAT,IS FUCKIN DOPE !
"Sly Boogy
Interview by Alex Richter
I was riding in the car one night listening to the radio when a new voice exploded through the speakers. I knew the song was destined to be an anthem from the very first time I heard the track. I was not sure who the artist was, or where he was from. But one thing was perfectly clear. A new contender had announced himself representing California. This cat goes by the name Sly Boogy, and his banger for the summer of 03 is “California”. I got a chance to speak with him over the phone about the album and life on a recent sunny April afternoon.
Alex- What’s going on?
Sly- Chilling.
Alex-How are you feeling today? . How’s the weather down there today? Sunny?
Sly- Yeah, it’s real sunny and warm, about 80.
Alex- I was starting to think I wasn’t going to catch up with you.
Sly- Yeah, we are in the studio right now, and there is no signal.
Alex- O.K that’s perfect since this conversation is about your music and the cd that you are about to release. What’s the name of the project? And when is it scheduled to hit the streets?
Sly- The album is titled “ Judgment Day” and is do to drop May 20. The label that it will be released by is Bolo Entertainment. That’s Sway and King Techs label.
Alex- How did you link up with Sway and Tech?
Sly- Well awhile back I was part of a group called The Black Spooks. And we went 92.3 The Beat. And at that time The Wake Up Show was on that station. And we went on there and played a few of our cuts. Did a drop. An anthem introduction for The Wake Up Show. And after that we hooked back up with Tech. Did another anthem, and from that point on the sequence of events led me to hookin up with Tech, and doing the Sly Boogie project.
Alex- Have you been using Sly Boogy for a while?
Sly- Yeah, for a while now. It’s been an on and off since I was a young-un. I’ve had a few different handles. But that’s been the one that stuck.
Alex- Does Tech do most of the production on the album?
Sly- He does some work on the album. But he mainly is the headman of the project. He overlooks and oversees everything.
Alex- What other producers do you have on the album?
Sly- We’ve got Babu from World Famous Beat Junkies, Level out of New York. We’ve got Focus. DJ Revolution, and also Jake One from Seattle.
Alex- You’re from L.A. right?
Sly- I’m from the High East. The Inland Empire. It’s about right at the L.A. County line when you are going on the 10 to San Bernardino.
Alex-If you were to describe your music in six words. How would describe your rhymes and style?
Sly- I would describe it as street music, thug music, politically conscious with a comical twist. Basically that’s it. But I’ve been working on trying to figure out how I can label it, categorize it. But yeah, that’s what I’ve come up with so far.
Alex- Since you said political, that brings out another question. How do you feel about the world we are living in right now in 2003?
Sly- Well I think that there is a lot of stuff that people are misled with as far as what the media gives us. And I think that music is a way for people to be exposed to new ideas and new facts. That can actually shine the light on what is really going on. Because there is a lot of underhanded, manipulative sh*t going on right now. I think a lot of people got it twisted, because all of the propaganda. And I feel that a lot of people do know what the real deal is, and music is a good vehicle to deliver that message. The real message, the truth.
Alex- So then “Judgment Day” will be hitting folks with some real truth.
Sly- This album has a couple messages in it, and they’re kind of hidden. They’re kind of sarcastic. But I think there’s a lot of truth to it. Because it reflects what is going on right now.
Alex-Well they say within sarcasm lays truth. So I’m sure people will get the message. Are you on the album mainly by yourself, or are there some guest spots?
Sly- Well, I got a few features. A girl named Noel, who’s a female vocalist. A cat by the name of Saigon from New York, who’s got heat. Butch Cassidy and Tracy Lane.
Alex- Speaking of singles, did you release “California” as a single yet?
Sly- Yeah its been released on wax. Exclusively for the DJ.
Alex- Did you find this project challenging?
Sly-Yeah, after coming out of a group. It’s like when you are in a group it’s a collective effort. But when you are by yourself its an individual effort. But it was fun, and enlightening. I learned a lot.
Alex-Who’s out there right now, that you would like to work with?
Sly- Well, I mean there’s a few cats I would like to work with. I wouldn’t mind working with Eminem. Because he’s got the formula down as far as keeping it thorough and being able to make records.
Alex- That’s real. What underground MC would like to work with?
Sly- Well, I worked with Crooked I, and he’s one of the illest cats out there. He’s on Death Row Records. Chino Xl is tight. I did a drop with him, Crook, and Planet Asia.
Alex- What separates you from those cats?
Sly- I think a lot of the material I have can be well received by the mainstream. I’m not trying to take anything away from them. Crook definitly has mainstream appeal. We got another album in the oven. It will have even more mainstream appeal.
Alex- You already have another solo project?
Sly- Yeah, it’s a second album.
Alex- So you’re ready to hit them with the one, two combination. When does that album drop?
Sly- Probably in fall.
Alex- The best of luck with everything.
Sly- I appreciate this, thanks
Alex-Peace.
Sly- Peace.
There’s a sampler that is running through the streets of Northern and Southern California right now that is ridiculous. If you don’t have it already, find it! Sly Boogy eats up every track with a ferocious appetite. I thought “California” was crazy tight, but believe it or not once I started digging through the 16 tracks, I found another 15 tracks of pure heat. He spits over original beats, but also showcases some sick drops from Sway and Techs “Wake Up Show”. This cat is bananas, and is ready to break the game. Watch out because The Westside is checking back into the game with a new sound for 2003.
