A 23-year-old San Francisco man was shot and killed Monday as he sat in a car outside his grandfather's home in the Oceanview district, police said.
The victim, Maxuman Chenier, was in the passenger seat waiting for his grandfather on Farallones Street near Plymouth Avenue when someone pulled alongside and opened fire at 9:41 a.m., police said.
San Francisco homicide Inspector Herman Jones said a car was seen leaving the scene and the suspect was armed with a semiautomatic handgun.
"It's an unfortunate circumstance -- there may have been an earlier dispute'' between the gunman and the victim, Jones said, adding that the victim was not associated with a gang and did not have a criminal history.
The victim, also known as Max, was a young rapper who had just made a recording.
"He had done two albums and he had done the recordings -- he had just completed his copyrights on Thursday,'' said his grandfather, also named Maxuman Chenier.
The elder Chenier said he and his grandson were at home and decided to go to Home Depot, run some other errands and then return home to work on a bicycle for Max's 4-year-old daughter.
"He and I walked out," the grandfather said, and they went to the car. Then, he added, he went back inside the home to retrieve his cell phone while his grandson stayed in the car, which was now started.
"I walked to the bedroom, picked up my telephone and then made about 10 steps in the kitchen,'' he said.
The elder Chenier never heard the gunshot. The first sign that something was wrong was when Max's girlfriend, who had been outside, came into the home, screaming and distraught. The elder Chenier said that the gunman, after shooting his grandson, had pointed the weapon at his grandson's girlfriend and then drove off.
He ran outside, he said, and saw glass shattered on driver side of his car. "He was laying back near the floorboard. I grabbed him and tried to give him respiration. He just didn't make it. He died right there in my arms.''
He said his grandson was looking for work, but didn't get involved in gangs. "He is not involved in any gang junk. He never was involved in that. He spent his time taking care of his little baby. He just made 23 last week.''
