The topic of slavery reperations once again makes it's way into the headlines. I was going to make a poll about this, but I am sure those who are voting will simply vote and not elaborate on why they voted one way or another. So why waste time when I can make a regular thread, post a link and talk about it? We've talked about this in the past, but I don't think a topic/thread was ever dedicated to it.

For those of you who advocate reparations for african-americans can you elaborate? Why do you feel african americans should be entitled to reparations, and in what way do you feel these reparations should be made?

For those of you who are against reparations for african-americans can you elaborate? Why do you feel african americans shouldn't be entitled to reparations and what do you think african americans should do instead of seeking reparations?

What we can do instead of seeking reparations is Keep doing what we are doing.. Everyone Imitates us and wants to be like us. so why dont we Dominate All the trends and the other Shit that the subburbian Kids feed into and Keep making money off it?

I'm not against free money or land or whatever they would give.

but I am against the fact that if we got reparations Now.. it would be nothing but a set back for us. We don't need hand outs we never have and never will. No one alive was a slave So why should we get anything for what our people had to deal with back in the day.

It would just make all the other races cry, and make us lazy.
Anyone with a brain can make it in america today.. So we dont need the governments bitch ass hand outs

reparations would just put us in the mind set that we can just cry about shit and get everything handed to us..

SO Fuck reparations they can try to hold us back some other way

If any of that made sence to you.. I tried

Hmm, well I don't know but ya see, black people are popular worldwide now and also in entertainment, so.....that might would be explained as "reparations", I dunno, it's good thing though...

@ Y-Soulja, I respect the fact that you took the time to voice your opinion, but popularity and reparations do not go hand in hand.

@datniggawilliam I'm not going to do my "usual" cut and paste job, but I do want you to clarify a couple of points. You said blacks should, "Keep doing what we are doing", but what exactly ARE blacks doing? Also, you contradict yourself, and I was hoping you could clarify something. How can you go from saying, "I'm not against free money or land or whatever they would give", but end your post by saying, "SO Fuck reparations"? Also, why do you use the term handouts to describe reparations? If america has yet to repair the problems stemming from slavery why would compensation be considered a hand out? Also, where is your proof that reparations will make blacks lazy, make other races cry, and ultimately create a detrimental mindstate?

I truly believe that all slaves should receive reparations. Unfortunately, all of the slaves are dead now.

But if slaves do deserve reparations, then I want my land in Sicily and Africa and the Jews can take their land in Egypt.

I'm Sicilian, so obviously I dont have a personal stake in reparations, however I've always been sympathetic to anybody who is born into a hard situation and has to face more obstacles in life based on something that they have no control over. Having said that, I dont believe anybody besides the original slaves deserve reparations, and the fact that it is still talked about 150 years after slavery ended really does confuse me.

I believe it is the job of the people to overcome any adversity, whether it be Jewish, Muslim, Asian, etc, however I don't understand how reparations could actually aid someone to overcome adversity. Just in the same way that relief money for Hurricane Katrina was misused, what guarantee do we have that giving reparations will solve any problem?

And also, who is this money going to come from? My family didn't get to America until after slavery ended, my whole family lives above the Mason-Dixon line, and my family itself is a product of slavery. So I'll be damned if I have to contribute to this reparation. Maybe take some of the money from the slave-owning hicks in the south, but how many of them have a substantial amount of money?

I feel that the black race deserves to come up, and ought to, but I think singling out any race for any reason is a step in the wrong direction.

Stealth, the fact that it may still confuse you may stem from the fact that the united states government DID promise some form of reparations. Also, regardless if reparations are ever made or not, it is up to the group of people to find their way. However, reparations were given to the so-called jews, money was given to Japan because of the bombs dropped during WW2, and Native Americans have land set aside for them. With all of this being fact why shouldn't the united states government live up to its promise?

Also, you ask where the money is going to come from, but where did the money come from when the Japanese were bombed and given millions of dollars in compensation, and what about the Civil Liberties Act of 1988?

So, are we to simply say "it happened lets just move on" simply because slaves no longer exist today? How does that remove the social, mental and economic misfortunes that are a RESULT from slavery? To say that blacks in america no longer suffer from the effects of slavery is 100% false. Slavery was not a short term incident that could be erased or turned off at the drop of a hat. Slavery was kidnapping, destruction of tribes/ancestors, illiteracy, poverty; etc.

Also, no one said anything about singling out a single race, but regardless of when it happened, why has white america not taken action to even APOLOGIZE or address the issue on a national level?

My wife's famiily, who would be inline to receive reparations, if any were ever given out, due to the fact that they can trace their lineage to Georgian slaves, has said that reparations would be nice, because look at the contributions African Americans made when America was in its infancy. However, she said a formal apology from the United States is long overdue, and would go along way in ending years of veiled antimosity and tension.

I support reparations, but only under specific conditions. First, I believe that only people who can definitively trace their lineage to confirm that they are in fact descendants of slaves should be entitled to reparations. I realize that some people who are descendants of slaves will not be able to prove this lineage, and therefore not be eligible for the reparations they are rightfully entitled too, but sacrifices need to be made in order for something of this magnitude to be accomplished.

The second condition would be similar to what the NAACP has been arguing that the people responsible for paying those reparations will be companies and families who can trace their wealth back to the exploitation of slaves. That is to say, any company that is in operation today, or any family that still retains a significant amount of wealth as a result of money passed down through the generations but originally created in part by slaves, will be the ones responsible for funding the reparations. The exceptions would be for families that can trace their heritage back to slave ownership, but do not have a significant amount of wealth ( an amount that would be predetermined, for example your family would need to be collectively worth 1 million dollars to be eligible to pay reparations) Making already poor families pay out what little money they have because of the mistakes of their family’s would probably do more harm then good, and only the people who are still benefiting off the money made in the slave trade or slave ownership should be considered. In other words, if I didn’t receive any money from my family but they owned slaves, I would not be required to pay any reparations. However if I did receive some sort of money, asset, etc from my family and it can be shown they did make money off slaves/slave trade then I would be liable to pay reparations. Business that exist today and did previously make money off of slaves/slave trade would be required to pay reparations in an amount that would need to be determined so that is reflects inflation, but also does not seriously negatively impact the company. Again making companies pay reparations in an amount that would put them out of business would do more harm then good.

Under these conditions, some African Americans might be required to pay reparations as their ancestors may have owned slaves at one point. This is an interesting consequence, but I believe it is fair under the conditions I have outlined.

The burden of proving who is a descendant of slaves and whose family or business is still profiting off the ownership of slaves or the slave trade would be on the US government as part of the reparations owed by the government. The government would also be liable to pay out some determined amount of reparations, as they like many businesses, profited heavily off of the money generated by slaves.

When I Condtradicted myself I only ment.. that If they sent me Money in the mail becuase im black I would cash it but I wouldnt go looking for it or try for it in anyway thats to much like Welfare.

as for the "Keep doing what we are doing" I mean.. keep going to college and making msuic Basicly things we wernt or coulnt do 50 years ago.. We dont have to be janitors or any low grade Profession you can think of.. we can do Anything the white people can do and maybe in even better. We have been coming up in the latey and WE should keep it up.

reparations would be a handout as far as i can see it becuase We don't need them.. Any of us can live here and make it.. Mexicans Can come over here and Take care of 15 kids without even having a green card.. Why would we need help if we have been here for over 100 years?
Black people arint being held Down Anymore as far can as I can tell.. So theres no need for reparations

The last part
"where is your proof that reparations will make blacks lazy, make other races cry, and ultimately create a detrimental mindstate?"

I have no proof .. but it is my opinion.

America has been built on the backs of newcomers. Irish, Italians and Chinese were at one time discriminated against and the Irish/Italians even considered non-white. They have built major metropolitan cities with blood, sweat and tears. The difference between these immigrants and African American immigrants is the African Americans did not come by choice. As slaves, they were not allowed upward mobility and they did not reap the benefits of their own work. Because they were not allowed to pave their own route they remained lower class in society and suffered from de facto and dejure discrimination years after slavery ended.

The work of African Americans helped build the United States into the superpower it is today. All American citizens and businesses have a responsibility to help correct the inequalities between blacks and whites, blacks and asians, and even blacks and mexicans. Even new immigrants who just became American citizens are benefiting from the agricultural and industrial work of African Americans hundreds of years before. Therefore, it should be the responsibility of the United States Government and every US citizen to bring equality to African Americans.

I do not believe financial or land reparations are appropriate. I believe reparations should be distributed to local African American community centers and educational resources. By helping build local African American communities and donating new educational resources and scholarships for African Americans the government would not be giving free hand outs, but providing routes to upward mobility. By providing community benefits and education, the government would be giving African Americans a chance to better the quality of life for themselves and future generations.

Unfortunately, I do not believe the US government will ever give reparations. The government is in the process of doing away with so-called entitlement spending and has its financial resources tied up overseas. datniggawilliam's point that other races will cry might be trying to say that if blacks receive reparations, Japanese Americans will look for reparations, Chinese will look for reparations, Mexicans will look for reparations, women will look for reparations, gays will look for reparations all claiming discrimination and inequality. While their plight is not as great as African Americans, they may all seek reparations. Then reparations would become a severe liability to the US government if granted.

So you just ignore mass unemployment(at least 50% of black men in the USA are jobless compared to less than 5% of white men),mass incarcaration(blacks make up 12% of the country and over 40% of its prisons),and the fact that white felons get more job opportunties in America than black men with no criminal record and equal qualifications?

You think its just a coincidence that the masses of black people reside in ghettos accross this country?

I've yet to come across the 50% rate myself, but a couple of months back, I did run across some pdf articles, web links and research that stated 50% of americas homeless population were african american.

http://www.nationalhomeless.org/publications/facts/Whois.pdf

(this link says 49%)
Good info. The highest unemployment rate I have found for African American Males was 13%, but nothing remotely near 50%.

That 50% of the homeless population being African American is pretty suprising. I had no idea it was that high. Native Americans only making up 2% of the homeless population was suprising as well. Maybe thats just because I am from Seattle.
