CBS 5 CrimeWatch
SAN JOSE (CBS 5 / KCBS) ― San Jose Mayor Chuck Reed and Police Chief Rob Davis will were trying Thursday to tamp down a growing controversy over the disproportionate number of Latinos who are arrested for public drunkenness.
Reed said he welcomes an opportunity to let the community know that the city is taking its concerns seriously.
Victor Garza, chairman of La Raza Roundtable, has been working with city officials to stop what he calls the criminalization of Latinos. He was hosting Thursday's news conference with Reed and Davis.
The controversy began last week when a published report said that San Jose police arrest more people for public drunkenness than any other police department in the state, and that more than half of those arrested were Latino.
this doesn't happen, does it? lmao. I've been pushed, threatened, etc. by probation/police officers working the crowds. san jose p.d. is a gang in itself.
