do u think their is a big enough difference that i should go with the 58 instead of the 57 or are they pretty much the same? its gonna be used for vocals and need to know if its necessary to spend the extra $20-30 on the 58....

Get a B1 w/ a basic rolls phantom power , thats probably the cheapest you can go for a powerful studio vocal mic. SM is live performance mic, i know lots of people use it as a budget vocal, but your far better off with a Behringer B1, It will cost a bit more but its worth it.

Aren't they the same mic?, The SM58 just comes with the built in Pop Screen
and an optional on/off switch. For vocals, I'd pick the 58 over the 57 if you were to go with that choice

If you're willing to save just a bit longer, for under $200, you can get a Studio Projects C1. I've read in many sources that it sounds almost identical to the industry standard Neuman U87. You likely won't find a better mic than that for under $600... I've not heard it myself, but it's certainly on my list of things to check out.

i don't know how anyone can use a cheap mic...
sell all your other equipment...do whatever you can to get a good mic

and nothing for 200 is gonna sound like a Nuemann U87...well maybe lol i'm gonna have to look into that now

but if that's your budget go with a Shure...but make sure you get a good phantom power box... i had one and tried to go directly into my gear without Phantom Powering...shit was crackinlin like a mothafucka...i even asked the cat at the store...does this need phantom power he said NAHHH...well he lied...i bought a phantom power box and shit worked a lot better(this was a while back...)

i'd save your money and get an AKG C3000A you can get one used for prolly the same range as a new Shure maybe even a C3000B used for the same price...

yeah it's fnie for background vocals ...even pretty good for just a home studio set up(non-commercial releases) but after a while you'll want something better...it's easier to just save up for the better mic...

and you're also right...there's a mic for everyone...we all have different tastes...

but you also know it's the begining of your chain...so a good mic is important

damnit get online heresey..i need to chop it with ya
