A New Orleans man who was caught slipping DVDs into his son's diaper bag at a Kenner Wal-Mart abandoned the toddler in the parking lot when police tried to arrest him, authorities said.
A Kenner Police Department report said an employee of the Wal-Mart at 300 W. Esplanade Ave. alerted an officer working as a private security guard that Joshua Gibson, 20, hid several digital video discs in a blue diaper bag he was carrying Saturday. The officer approached Gibson as he and his 2-year-old son exited the business. Gibson admitted that he removed several DVDs from their cases and put them in the diaper bag, the report said. The officer told Gibson he was under arrest and started to escort him and his son to the security office.
That's when Gibson made a break for it, leaving the 2-year-old in the parking lot, the report said.
The DVDs were valued at $113.28.
Gibson was found more than 30 minutes later hiding on the fourth floor of Ochsner Medical Center-Kenner, said Lt. Wayne McInnis, Kenner Police Department spokesman. The hospital is located across Loyola Drive from Wal-Mart.
McInnis said he didn't know where the child was released but said children in these circumstances usually are placed in the custody of relatives.
Police booked Gibson, of 1210 Feliciana St., with theft, resisting arrest and child desertion. He was released Monday because of jail crowding, McInnis said.
Gibson could not be reached Tuesday for comment.
