SEVIS
Student and Exchange Visitor Information System
The Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) is an Internet-based software application being developed by the Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) that will provide tracking and monitoring of non-immigrant students (F and M visas) and exchange visitors (J visa) and their dependents. The interactive portion of SEVIS is to be available July 1, 2002. While development and pilot projects have been underway for some time, the Patriot Act of October 2001, sets August 1, 2003 as the date by which schools must enter data into SEVIS about those students who were enrolled prior to January 30, 2003. This dramatic acceleration of this system is affecting higher education IT departments, international student offices, and human resources departments that are working meet the implementation deadline.

For the record, Auburn University was a test model school that implemented the new software used to track students...
If a foreign students fails to notify the administration of a change of address or a change in his school status, he will be deported...
Pretty sad...my question is why are their financial records and stuff going to be monitored? I know this arctile doesnt say it will, but I saw a report on the Columbus, Ga news about the program last week and they were talking about it and interviewing some foreign students and asking them if they thought the new system was fair.....
