Don't really like it much. The sequencing doesn't seem as tight as any hardware sequencer I have used. I mean it works. But I can notice a subtle difference. Anybody here use Cubase to sequence? What are your opinions on it. What do you prefer? Soft or Hardware sequencing? Why?

Cubase is one of the best sequencers out there. it takes alot of knowledge to know everything about it. Read on it, get info from peeps and let them show you, and you'll be amazed by what it can do. It makes life easier.

maybe you just aint using it to it's full potential.

???? Do you realize how old this post is? It's a tight program. The sequencing is still ok...but not up to par with hardware sequencing. The main thing with me is creative flow...and getting in a zone. I just cant get into that "groove" with software sequencing like I can with a "boxed" sequencer...wether it be a Keyboard or drum machine/sampler. Don't get me wrong, I got some stuff to do in Cubase today as matter of fact. It's an important part of my setup. The majority of my midi files are imported ...and not created there....I just like it that way. Different strokes for different folks.

but than again, it's exactly the same. you can get drum pads and a keyboard added to actually do realtime and not just use the mouse to click. that way you can have the feel of actually doing things hands on and stuff. computer keyboard shortcuts are the key in cubase also. figure those out and you'll be at ease.

actually do you have ya keyboard and drummachine hooked up to run with cubase? you can have the best of bothworlds.

no i didn't realize how old it was. thought i would reply cus i saw nobody really did and i'm just reading thru stuff on the archives. atleast you replied.

.

I got those figured out. I use my RS as a controller as well as a keyboard controller. That's why I'm able to compare between the two and use what fit's me best. Every producer/beatmaker have their own pipeline. It's what comes out the other end that matters. I can give a damn if you stir the soup clockwise or counter clockwise...as long as it tastes good when it's done...feel me.

I wouldn't use anything other than Cubase SX 3.

It's the best software sequencer I have come across.

If you started out with hardware chances are your going to like hardware better, like you said different strokes for different folks and the only thing that matters in the end is the outcome of what you are composing, and if it sounds better when it comes out of your MPC than something like Cubase, then stick with the MPC for sequencing. But it's good to get the best of both worlds, why not, if you can?

Peace.

How do you guys think it compares to Sonar? Sonar looks pretty good as well.

I don't know though, I still absolutely LOVE FL Studio. I seriously don't understand how FL gets dissed so much, I think it's easy as hell to use, yet still very effective. I find it's interface and sequencing is really easy to use IMO. Whatever, everyone has different opinions, it all depends on how you use the tools. Some people work better with hardware, some work better with software.

my broham is gonna give me cubase, my question is do i need equipment to make beats or does it have stuff preloaded? i am not beat making savvy at all.

You need some type of midi input to use VST instruments. When you get it...go directly to the help menu and start from the beginning where it says getting started...and don't skip ANYTHING! That's the best advice I can give you. If you don't have a midi controller and cables. you can use virtual midi cables ...it's called "Midi Yoke" and you can use "Bomes mouse keyboard" to use your pc keyboard to make music...since your starting.

Bomes Keyboard

Midi Yoke.
http://www.midiox.com/myoke.htm

There are tutorials at both sites to get your pc keyboard setup as a piano. Try this first instead of going out and breaking bread for something...you might not like.

best thing about sonar 6 it has a 64 bit engine, other then that i like cubase better. as for FL it sounds too electronically even its new 1, but there was major improvements since 4.

Sonar 6 is good. It's solid. They really stepped up. I'm still learning this software so, I can't say. But I do like Cubase better. I know that.

FL Studio is solid. It's a good program, it's easy to use, it's flexible and it does a lot of things easily. I don't like it's rendering engine, it's exporting. I also don't like the sequencing very much. I don't like the Playlist song building. I enjoy the classic style of sequencing, editing and arranging, like in Cubase or Reason. Especially Cubase. Now if FL Studio had a track window like that, it would be a much more versatile program. But it is good software, and it's affordable, and Image Line gives unlimited updates on every new version that comes out for free to registered users so you only pay once which is a first I think? Great deal. I just prefer the professionalism Cubase offers me.

Peace.

By the way my history with the above software. I started with FL Studio, then I started using Reason, then I started using Cubase SX. Now I use Cubase SX and I rewire Reason and FL Studio occasionally if I need to, maybe for a certain sound. But other than that it's Cubase SX + VST/VSTi all the way. Sonar 6 I just started using, so, I still use all 4, but mainly Cubase SX.
