I know there was a thread about it, but I guess everything got compressed into one page on here. anyways, my mic sucks. I want something thats good enough to have good vocal recordings without a soundproof booth, since I'm not going to be able to build one yet. I'd like to know what y'all consider the best as well as the most cost efficient.

RE-20
AKG D12 I think its a mic for tracking drum kicks but we tracked vocals on it and it sounded surprizingly good on a guy with a deep voice

1. What mic are you using now?

2. What are you recording through (interface/pre amp)?

3. What is your budget?
1. I dunno, but its a pretty low grade condenser mic

2. just an mbox 2

3. definetly under $500. I need to pick up a new turntable and can't be spending a G

I wouldn't really reccommend the mxl 990 defy if u already got a low grade condenser mic, ur basicly gonna buy a different brand low grade condenser mic if u get the 990. I picked one up about 2 years ago, and its just really thin for vocals, Its actually not to bad as an overhead though while its a bit unconventional (to use a large diaphragm condeser as an overhead) it still does a decent job as an overhead. but since that is not what your gonna use it as I would not reccommend it.

Don't toss it out. Keep it for experiments and what not.

Certainly not the best pre amps, but far from being the worst on teh market. However, I would upgrade the mic instead of the pre amp, so we'll focus on the mic.

would you suggest getting anything else for good sound as well like other hardware or software or plugins or something? (b/c of what you said about teh mbox2)

I'll probably go to Leo's or Guitar Center in the next couple days to get this.

It depends on what you mean by "good sound". You may want something that is solid state (what goes in is what comes out) or you may want something that adds "color" or "distortion" to the signal going in (like a tube pre amp.)

At this point, I would focus on hardware instead of going the software route, but if you do go the software route, look into the MCDSP plugins and the URS plugins. If you are looking for some hardware thats going to depend on your budget, but the Really Nice Pre Amp is a good choice, and so is the aphex model that Youngmoe uses. Grace makes good pre amp in the $600 and under range also, and the presonus blue tube had 18 points out of 20 in Electronic Musician. No matter what, get the mic first and additional gear later.

SHURE SM58 is the best way to go. Just cus you got a good mic doesn't mean you can't record some fucked up vocals. Gotta learn the technique and adjust to every mic. that XXL 990 mic peeps was talking about is pretty good. it's good that it picks up every damn sound. that's what it's suppose to do. that's why you need to keep still and not jump around spittin in the booth or open room. plus it depends on ya mastering skills to make it sound better also. best mic for the price shure sm58. and you'll have money for a turntable.

I went into guitar center and leo's and both told me different things. at guitar center, they had the rode ntk, but the guy kept trying to get me to buy the k2 (I think) that was 699. they didn't have many other mics that were mentioned tho. in leo's the guy was talking about an SE Electronics 2200 cardiod, and saying how many people loved the sound it produces, as well as it doesn't break your pockets....I was just reading reviews online and they were quite impressive, saying its out performs mics that are priced above it, and that it almost compares to neuman mics (in the $2000+ price range) anyone heard of it?
