A doctor of nuclear medicine and an assistant professor at Penn
Newberg's center is not a bricks-and-mortar structure but a multidisciplinary team of Penn researchers exploring the relationship between the brain and spirituality from biological, psychological, social and ideological viewpoints. Founded last April, it is bringing together some 20 experts from fields including medicine, pastoral care, religious studies, social work and bioethics.
Someone obviously has no insight or knowledge about psychology and why this research is being done.

Did you even read the article bruh? It had nothing to do with what you're rambling about.. They're studying neurological effects of the brain..

Then studying the Metaphysical is a waste of money? Finding a cure of Aids is a waste of money. Finding new planets, a waste of money. War on Terror is a waste of money. Responding to your closed mind is a waste of money. Most atheists on this board, have stated that they don't fully deny God, but have yet to believe God exists because of physical proof. You're the only one.

Who cares what happens in the brains of monks?

Isn't it more important to fund basic research on more fundamental issues than what's going on in the heads of some lunatics?

these guys deserve it

BTW there is no such thing as a "baby" until about the 6th month of pregnancy, because the nervous system hasn't been completely formed yet, e.g the "baby" is not a human yet, but anyway, that's the topic of a different discussion

Does God exist outside the human mind, or is God a creation of our brains?
(taken from website)

I wish they would explain how such hypotheses are testable. It seems they are implying that in order to authenticate a said spiritual experience, the results of neurological tests have to show sporadic causes that are contrary to physical processes in the brain. Otherwise, how does one determine a spiritual experience as outside the mind by studying the mind? It is the spirit that animates the mind and body in the first place. And by doing so, the mind and body work the way we know they do according to our scientific understanding. Therefore, why would they necessarily work differently during a spiritual experience?

spirit, huh?

I get a headache when I hear words like that

what we know is that our so called mind is entirely based on biochemical processes that happen in our brain; it is the way neurons are wired and the signaling molecules that they exchange that determines our cognitive abilities

what these people study is what's different in the brain of people who are deeply religious, absolutely useless, if you ask me, but anyway, they're interested in the problem
