DALLAS -- A Texas high school girls basketball team on the winning end of a 100-0 game has a case of blowout remorse.

Now officials from The Covenant School say they are trying to do the right thing by seeking a forfeit and apologizing for the margin of victory.

"It is shameful and an embarrassment that this happened," Kyle Queal, the head of the school, said in a statement, adding the forfeit was requested because "a victory without honor is a great loss."

The private Christian school defeated Dallas Academy last week. Covenant was up 59-0 at halftime.

A parent who attended the game told The Associated Press that Covenant continued to make 3-pointers -- even in the fourth quarter. She praised the Covenant players but said spectators and an assistant coach were cheering wildly as their team edged closer to 100 points.

"I think the bad judgment was in the full-court press and the 3-point shots," said Renee Peloza, whose daughter plays for Dallas Academy. "At some point, they should have backed off."

Dallas Academy coach Jeremy Civello told The Dallas Morning News that the game turned into a "layup drill," with the opposing team's guards waiting to steal the ball and drive to the basket. Covenant scored 12 points in the fourth quarter and "finally eased up when they got to 100 with about four minutes left," he said.

Dallas Academy has eight girls on its varsity team and about 20 girls in its high school. It is winless over the last four seasons. The academy boasts of its small class sizes and specializes in teaching students struggling with "learning differences," such as short attention spans or dyslexia.

There is no mercy rule in girls basketball that shortens the game or permits the clock to continue running when scores become lopsided. There is, however, "a golden rule" that should have applied in this contest, said Edd Burleson, the director of the Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools. Both schools are members of this association, which oversees private school athletics in Texas.

"On a personal note, I told the coach of the losing team how much I admire their girls for continuing to compete against all odds," Burleson said. "They showed much more character than the coach that allowed that score to get out of hand. It's up to the coach to control the outcome."

In the statement on the Covenant Web site, Queal said the game "does not reflect a Christ-like and honorable approach to competition. We humbly apologize for our actions and seek the forgiveness of Dallas Academy, TAPPS and our community."

Covenant coach Micah Grimes did not immediately respond to a message left by The Associated Press on Thursday.

Queal said school officials met with Dallas Academy officials to apologize and praised "each member of the Dallas Academy Varsity Girls Basketball team for their strength, composure and fortitude in a game in which they clearly emerged the winner."

Civello said he appreciated the gesture and has accepted the apology "with no ill feelings."

At a shootaround Thursday, several Dallas Academy players said they were frustrated during the game but felt it was a learning opportunity. They also said they are excited about some of the attention they are receiving from the loss, including an invitation from Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban to see an NBA game from his suite.

"Even if you are losing, you might as well keep playing," said Shelby Hyatt, a freshman on the team. "Keep trying, and it's going to be OK."

Peloza said the coach and other parents praised the Dallas Academy girls afterward for limiting Covenant to 12 points in the fourth quarter. She added that neither her daughter nor her teammates seemed to dwell on the loss.

"Somewhere during that game they got caught up in the moment," Peloza said of the Covenant players, fans and coaches. "Our girls just moved on. That's the happy part of the story."

yeah scary…I was thinking the same thing until I read that the school is for kids with “learning differences”…which just seems a nice way of saying retarded.

They haven’t won in 4 years…no need to run up the score like that.

see i get that I truly truly do, but it's a school league not a rec league, parents need to understand that, life sucks sometimes and this was 1 of those times. If they haven't won in 4 years the parents should know what they are getting into before hand.

It obviously didn't seem to bother the losing team players so why should the parents be making a big deal of it? the parents should take a queue from their "learning different" kids.

and it's short attention spans and dyslexia, not like they are kids with cerebal palsy or downs syndrome or anything...they are pyshically capable of playing the game at a normal or higher level

No Class

As a coach, I can tell all of you that this Head Coach had absolutely no class and should be disciplined! When you get way ahead, that's when you put in your 2nd and 3rd stringers. Especially with these circumstances it's ridiculous! The so called winning team in this game actually made themselves look like a bunch of dumb asses.

It's sad, but unfortunately I have to deal with simple minded parents every year who think like that and so does our league. Once in awhile we actually get coaches who have that losers mentality too!

I have personally had one of my own assistant coaches suspended and then eventually dismissed permanently from coaching. Our football league has a mercy rule for obvious reasons like this. We were ahead of the team 31-0 going into the 4th qt. I had to practically argue with my asst. to put in all of our 3rd stringers including the TB. As soon as I turn my back he throws him back in and what happens.... We score again! I almost got suspended for one game, but I was lucky the other team's coach stood up for me.

I can't stand stupid motherfuckers that want to run the score up. These are probably the same fucks who play Madden on super easy and win every time like 105 to 0!!! Grow the fuck up people and yes that Head Coach should be suspended for making his school look like a bunch of losers...

I have coached baseball for many years and I can see where you are coming from but look at the sizes of these schools, putting in reserves is almost a non option.

Also if you have a mercy rule you are a non-school league. you may not want to call it rec but at the same time any league with a mercy rule is bascially a rec league, and yes in rec leagues mercy rules are in place for a reason.

I agree they should have called back the players from shooting 3's and playing full court, but at the same time if the school hasnt won in 4 years they should either look at coaching or reevaluate if they even need a school team. Would these same parents have enjoyed the same 100-0 score if they won..you bet they would have but they are on the wrong end and all of a sudden it's an issue? winless in 4 years, these parents know full well what they are getting thier kids into when they join this schools team.

I am of the belief that you play like you practice and you practice like you play, and that is from first minute to last minute never give up. When you do thats when mistakes or bad habits happen. Sure this team was up 100-0 and didnt need to push but what is a comfortable lead?? 10 points 20 points etc.... the game is not over until the buzzer sounds. like I said they should have stopped jacking up 3's and no full court but outside of that what should they have done??? throw inbounds directly to other team?? dribble for 2 minutes at a time??? if you ask me both of those are even more humiliating circumstances as that is basically saying look im not even going to try just take it, or look at me i can dribble for 2 minutes and nothing you can do about.

My sons teams have been beaten 50-10 and they have also won 60-8, in both instances I was proud because both teams played through the end, no parents of either game cried about it as we all know thats how it goes sometimes.

I'm not trying to sound like a jackass or anything like that but sports is sports and someone has to lose, and some of those loses are pretty bad, thats life in sports! if you can't handle it don't play in non rec leagues.

ok sorry the more i think about it the more it pisses me off.

Why are none of the parents blaming the coaching of thier own team? why are they not blaming the athletic director who booked this game? why dont they just scrap the program so the kids (who if you read the article weren't affected they were happy to be playing, it's the parents causing the uproar) dont lose anymore?

What the hell does this teach?? well kids if you try to hard it may make you look bad if you beat the other team by too many points, forgetting the fact thats its not thier fault the other team sucks.

so it's not the losing coachs fault at all, or the schools ad for booking a game against a much superior opponent?

there are ethics in sports. especially when kids are involved. i believe in fair play. winning is important, but to have confidence, hope and self belief destroyed at a young age is not cool. a loss like that will scar them kids.

if an nfl team losses 100-0 thats different. they are grown ass men getting paid to play. these kids use sports to learn how to compete. building the youth through sports has kept millions of kids out of trouble. how many of these girl end up pregnant? they quit sports cause they got they ass kicked, and now they lose their competitive spirit. seems like a stretch right..... big picture bro. big picture.

so yeah its all good. opinions are just that. but ill be damned if one of my kids gets punked like that.

i know my sports. i know about ethics. and the head coach should be fired.
and the losing school should look at their sports department a little better. either dropping the girls basketball all together or placing a more suitable schedule for their program.

but in the end, its still chicken shit.

it's high school basketball.....they are not young kids! and yes they are going to get pregnant because they lost a game 100-0..hahahahahahahahaha they will probbaly get pregnant for not having confisdence in school because of a learning disability not becasue of losing a basket ball game varisty non less menaing they are already 16-18 years old

No matter what the circumstances are, it's plain and simple! That head coach of the so called winning team should be disciplined or even fired! Scary... I wouldn't call Pop Warner a rec league! It's a very competitive Cheer and Football league that has a lot of NFL Alumni. They have playoffs, regional championships and then the Super Bowl in Orlando, Florida. I agree with Dutch in that these are kids and there are ethics involved. Look at some NFL teams that have class and just keep running the ball between the tackles or kneel it down when they are way ahead!

When this coach and his team was up 50-0, you can't tell me he couldn't tell how the game was going to end up! Why didn't he pull his star point guard or whatever player(s) then. Shit, they get most of the playing time in most of the games anyway! Why not let the less gifted nonathletic kids run the court? Like I said, I've even punted on 3rd down or attempted a FG when I knew we could score again. It gives the kicker, punter and other back up players more experience and time to better their skills. When those older kids move on, someone will have to take their place. Why not be ahead of the game for next season. I've found some diamonds in the rough by giving kids chances in these circumstances...
