So Francisco Rodriguez set the single-season saves record. Wow, I'm so not impressed. This statistic is so overrated and I don't know why. Closers do nothing but come in and pitch one inning of a game. The hitters have faced one pitcher for the entire game (or maybe a few) and adjust to the pitcher and get their timing down. Now a hard-throwing closer comes in. And they are usually hard throwers. They come into a game because they can usually blow the ball by hitters, but only one time around. That is why they are in the bullpen instead of starting the game on the mound. They have no trouble blowing the ball by hitters one time around, but when the hitters come up for a second time they have the timing down and usually light up the pitcher. I don't see what the big deal about closers and saves. If you want to impress me, go throw nine innings. If you want to impress me even more, throw nine innings and give up three runs or less. But this one inning bullshit statistic, don't make it a big deal because it really is not.
