This is an excellent question and it highlights an area of misunderstanding that both retailers and manufacturers need to do a better job addressing.

There are currently no source signals in 120HZ. Signals are either 24, 30 or 60Hz. An LCD HDTV with 120hz capability is upconverting a signal to 120hz to address motion blur on an LCD TV. Similar to how a 1080p TV will upconvert a signal from 1080i or 720p to 1080p (because there are no 1080p sources besides Blu-ray), a 120 HZ TV is only upconverting a lower hz signal (and not accepting 120hz signals).

This does not mean a 120 HZ TV doesn’t improve your picture because it does. 120hz TVs minimize motion blur found on standard LCD TVs. It’s just confusing because of how they labeled it. If the industry simply called it something like “Auto Motion Plus” (Samsung’s term for this 120HZ feature) or something like this, it would be less confusing.

Another note about 120hz, some people do not like how a 120hz LCD TV upconverts the signal so Samsung allows you to turn Auto Motion Plus (120hz) on and off so you have flexibility to use this upconversion for all content, specific content or not at all.

Hope this helps. Thanks for buying a 650.
