How do you feel about sampling (from existing songs)? do you do it? if not, why? if you do, what do you do? do you chop the samples to take sounds like a guitar riff or snare or do you use loops?

the reason I'm asking is cuz I like sampling & sampled beats, although I would much rather play all the instruments myself but right now financially (and skill-wise) I'm unable to do it. I've made beats in the past that were just straight loops and added drums to it and some that were more chopped. puffy is looked down upon because all he does is sample, but then again dr dre & sj premier sample all the time and are looked at as the best in the business. now primo chops samples (usually the same way each time, but still...) and dre uses alot of full loops....

...as a listener who makes music (or knows how to make beats) do you feel any differently when you hear someone just loop a break?

i sample a lot just to mess around. i like to give a new vibe to existing songs. sometimes i'll just take a straight loop from a song or i'll chop it up occasionally.

i really don't think theres anything wrong with it. some take it as stealing someone elses work. i see it as bringing classics back in a new form. i was raised on a lot of the songs i sample.

if i use samples i try do switch it up a bit or add elements to it to make it different. sometimes people can pull off just a loop and nothing else.

im weird about it though. sometimes i think its nice to hear samples cuz i like soulful kid of beats, but at times i think damn, they just straight up copied the song.

edit: another thing is a sample is sometimes an easy way out for me. like if in a certain mood and i just cant capture the feel with composing it myself, i will go to my music library.

I have a couple beats where I just took different parts of the song and looped it (with ableton live) and the shit comes out so clean that I'm hella clueless as to what to add to it.

like, for example, I took a Sade song and sped it up a bit and it sounds kinda hyphy....but one of the parts I sampled was the bassline, and the percussion in there is already tight along with the melody, so I'm like "wtf do I do with it now?" besides making the drums hit harder I'm just stuck with it.....but the way its chopped it sounds like a complete song....

personally no, I don't think its wrong, but if I hear that l think of a tribe called quest only cuz they used it too....as soon as it started I could hear consequence's voice rapping in my head

I think it sounds coo tho....out of curiosity what did you do to the beat besides adding kicks & claps? if you don't wanna go into it its all gravy

i like to incorporate sampling and live instruments, whatever im feelin.
when i sample ill usually chop it and fuck with filters, fx, pitch, layers and whatever else sounds dope.
i tend to steer away from looping but every so often there's a loop thats too perfect to chop, ill still try and do something with it tho.

would you consider that wrong?

and thizz check my sig.

Sounds good, definitely chill.

I personally see nothing wrong with sampling. Sampling older ish gives the track a nice warm sound, unlike all the new digital sounding shit that's all synthesizer based. I love the sound of REAL instruments. Like in your example, the beat you added makes it rapable and I don't think there's anything wrong with that. That beat gives it some thump. I see it as modernlizing an older song. Bringing an older song's melody or whatever up with current trends. I hardly ever sample myself though. I like to come up with my own melodies. I just hate f-ing with wave editors and getting it to loop right, that's why I don't do it, I'm lazy and just don't have the patience to do it.

I think it's honor to be sampled though.

The music we listen to today wouldn't be available if it weren't for sampling so although I think composing and writing your own music is essential, sampling is just as important.

Sometimes I take a few loops and arrange them and then compose more elements over them, sometimes I take a sample and chop it up, add effects, and then play it my own way. Depends on the sample.

I also prefer composing my own melodies, but I enjoy sampling and I think it's an important skill to have as a composer.

Here is an old joint I did about 7 months ago, Lonnie Liston joint, you can hear the original in the beginning and then my chops come in.

Sampling is essential in music, especially rap music, pop music.
