Life is what you make it, Sac ain't poppin on the radio, because everybody refuses to suck they (the radio station's) dicks. Our radio stations are so concerned with ASCAP, BMI, and the FCC rather than capitlizing off unmined diamonds in the ruff. You gotta buy a D.J a drink and tell em how they commericalized mixing is so tight for em go out on limb for you. The day's of latenite sessions on "102.5" freestyles are gone. They're trying to come back... so let's give it a minute. I got faith in alot of this new & old talent breaking thru the surface. We(Sac) are attracting a lot of new found attention from niggas worldwide. Pretty soon someone is going to bring home a championship ring( gold or Platinum plaque).
real talk mane.
I used to co-host the Flava show with Ebro, and we used to freestyle on air, and in the parking lot afterwards FOR HOURS. It was real peace too. On any given night, you'd be outside freestylin' with Soul Clap, the CUF, E-Train, Dre-D, Tri-numbskulls, Lynch, the Socialistics, and R-Dot (God Bless the dead). I mean...the scene was just bubblin', and it SUCKED that we couldn't play ANY local music. That was a big disappointment for me, because I got into radio in order to promote local artists, but I soon learned the ways of the radio world. No ends, no spins. I HATED the fact that I had to play Skee-Lo, Vanilla Ice, and Snow, but I couldn't play anything local. I remember how excited we were, because we had recieved a clean copy of C-BO's "Groovin' on a Sunday." Took it into a music meeting, and it got shot down in favor of Lighter Shade of Garbage's "Crusin' on a Sunday." WTF!!! I played the joint regardless, and the phones went crazy...unfortunately so did the Boss. I got fired for that shit, even though C_BO's song recorded over 150 requests in a 2 hour span, AWOL wasn't spending any money on advertising, so NO SPINS. WOW.
That was the basis of a gang of us starting up local stations like CPR 100.1 in Oak Park, 107.1 in Meadowview, 92.9 off of Franklin, and KNOZ Downtown (forgive me for not recalling your frequency)...giving the PEOPLE what they want to hear AND supporting LOCAL businesses and artists. Let me tell you this, I've done WAY more shows with and had way more support from artists doing pirate radio, than with a licenced station. I got Twista to rock 2 songs at Melarkey's for an 1/8th, for cryin' outloud!!
Suga Free, B-Legit, The Dogg Pound, Whoridas, DJ Rectangle, Jon B, and Twista all came here to Sac to do shows with us, and the other stations in town HATED it. We took the Mossie to Rancho Arroyo one night....nuff said. This is the type of shit that mainstream radio DOESN'T do....build relationships with the artists and most importantly, the community. These artists KNEW that their songs wer getting PLAYED and HEARD on the pirate stations, and would come thru whenever they could WITHOUT label support, just for hood love.
Show love to KNOZ and give them you're support, because they are TRULY the people's station.
Peace.
