EXCLUSIVE: Courthouse Brawl Caught On Camera
TACOMA, Wash. -- A prisoner is led away in handcuffs when a fight breaks out at the Pierce County Courthouse in Tacoma.
KIRO 7 obtained exclusive video of the dramatic melee captured on several surveillance cameras.
South Sound reporter Kevin McCarty worked with Pierce County authorities for nearly two weeks to get the video released.
McCarty said officials wanted to wait until the trial that was under way in the Pierce County Courthouse was over before they gave access to the video.
In the footage, three men charge after the man on trial, right past and even right over corrections officers, starting a brawl inside the courthouse.
Marsele Henderson, the defendant in gray and handcuffs, was on trial for the November 2008 murder of 18-year-old Victor Schwenke.
On June 30, as the trial was progressing, friends and family members of Schwenke are outside the courtroom, when they spotted an opening.
The footage shows them landing on a group of chairs, smashing them, then proceeding to beat and kick Henderson as corrections officers regain their footing and go for their Tasers.
One of the men gets Tased -- then falls to the ground. Then a second man suffers a Taser application -- and goes down.
Down the hall, another fight breaks out as Henderson's father grabs a man he thinks is going after his son.
Sheriff's deputies are seen on camera rushing to the brawl to back up the corrections officers, quickly filling the hallway and taking control of the situation, several with guns and Tasers drawn, getting the suspects on the ground and in custody in a matter of seconds.
