49ers To Honor Lott Back to Homepage
Wednesday, November 05, 2003

Lott joined the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2000.

The 49ers will hold a Noon PST press conference today with Ronnie Lott to announce a special halftime ceremony during the November 17 Monday Night game that will honor the Hall Of Fame safety.

Lott's number 42 is expected to join the long, illustrious list of 49ers who have had their number retired.

"Ronnie actually was a tad-bit hesitant because he didn't want any attention brought to him," 49ers owner Dr John York told Matt Maiocco of the Santa Rosa Press Democrat. "He liked the idea of having his number retired, but he's a fairly private person and he was not interested in a lot of fanfare. We got to a point where Ronnie is comfortable with it. He clearly had a big part in deciding how much to do and how to do it. His desire to have this tied to two of the charities he's involved with was clearly very important to him."

Lott, known for his ferocious play and leadership, was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2000, along with Joe Montana and Dave Wilcox.

49ers.Com will bring you a complete wrap-up following the conference.

Highthewholeway is trippin. Ronnie Lott started out with the NINERS and played 10 seasons with the NINERS. He only played from 91-92 with the L.A. Raiders. And the LAST team he played for was the JETS in 93-94, NOT the Raiders. So, sorry to say, but he went in as a NINER.

49ers to retire Lott's No. 42 on 'Monday Night Football'

Cam Inman , CONTRA COSTA TIMES

SANTA CLARA - Two red jerseys bearing his soon-to-be retired No. 42 hung in the background, and tears escaped the daunting eyes of former 49ers defensive back Ronnie Lott at a Wednesday news conference.

The heart-tugging topic: How do you answer your kids when they ask about your left pinkie, the one you opted to have amputated above the third knuckle to keep playing late in the 1985 season?

Lott paused for 15 seconds. He wiped away tears. And he stole a glimpse at his pinkie, which symbolizes the intense commitment he made in his Hall of Fame career more so than a uniform number that, as the 49ers announced Wednesday, will be retired at halftime of the Nov. 17 game against the Pittsburgh Steelers on "Monday Night Football."

"Um, you just joke around with them to let them know there are certain things that happen in your life. You try to explain there are sacrifices that you make," Lott said. "Sometimes those sacrifices you make, people don't understand it. But at some point they'll get it.

"That's what I'm hoping they'll get, at some point in their life they'll be able to make sacrifices for their teammates, they'll make sacrifices for their friends. But it's kind of hard to get people to understand, 'Why would you do that?' So my kids right now probably think it looks like E.T.'s head. But at some point, they'll realize that's an important aspect of the Lott family -- making sacrifices for others."

Lott won four Super Bowls during his career with the 49ers from 1981-1990, then finished up with two-year stints with the Raiders and the New York Jets.

Three years after Lott's induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, his number will be the 10th retired by the 49ers.

Lott said he'll humbly accept the honor as long as he can parlay the Nov. 17 ceremony into a benefit for less fortunate youths. Fans attending that game will be asked to donate $10 to purchase a light for Macy's tree-lighting event at Union Square in San Francisco. Proceeds go toward UCSF's Children's Hospital, a frequent stop for the philanthropic Lott.

"For all the guys that play the game and see they can't wear 42, hopefully they'll know it's because of a certain honor of how I honored the game, and that it wasn't given to me," Lott said. "I earned it and played the game for the right reasons."

Gracious at the gesture by 49ers owners John York and Denise DeBartolo York, Lott said he would have preferred a low-key ceremony.

"The reason why is there are a number of other athletes that played here that also should have the same honor that I have," Lott said.

He then lobbied for those numbers worn by running back Roger Craig (33), quarterback Steve Young (8), wide receiver Jerry Rice (80), tight end Brent Jones (84), linebacker Keena Turner (58) and defensive end Fred Dean (74).

But Lott's recognition is well deserved, said team consultant Bill Walsh, who coached the 49ers to their first Super Bowl win in 1981 with Lott as his rookie left cornerback and first-round draft pick.

"We were fortunate to have all of these players, but Ronnie was the best defensive back ever to have played the game," Walsh said. "... You can tell how important (his amputated pinkie) is to him, how much his passion for the game means to him."

Damn, soon they're going to run out of number. Ronnie's should be retired just like Joe's, Steve's, and Jerry's... I don't know about Roger Craig's though

Roger Craig's number will not be retired. Tony Perish currently wears #33 and others in the past have had that number after Craig. Joe's 16 and Ronnie's 42 have never been worn by another 49er!
